How does a religious culture become so insecure, so devoid of humanity that not only does it behead apostates and fear education but also spawns individuals and groups such as:

The multi-day rampage focused on Baga and the surrounding towns and villages. The militants razed an estimated 16 towns around Baga, according to the BBC.
“These towns are just gone, burned down,” Borno State Senator Ahmed Zanna told NBC News. “The whole area is covered in bodies.”
The rampage has led to the deaths of an estimated 2,000 Nigerian civilians along with sending approximately 10,000 people fleeing for their lives into neighboring Chad, according to the Associated Press.

I didn't blame it on religion but on the culture it has spawned and it would never occur to one such as you that the place "is vol ital and seemingly devoid of reason" BECAUSE of the religious culture.

Not in a long time, no. Maybe I'll go out into the desert during the next Spring Equinox or Summer Solstice and trip on some shrooms or maybe even some DMT, and have myself an epic vision quest.​

The problem is that they want to force others to do as they will. Despite the fun the right has been making of Howard Dean's comments, he was correct. We need to differentiate between Muslims and Islamists.

I agree...Deals Gap is a beautiful ride (through the Smoky Mountain National Park, with 318 curves in 11 miles!), and so is the Blue Ridge.
