Several Western countries have worked for decades openly and secretly to separate south south from its mother country, Sudan, however these countries have begun to regret the secession of South Sudan following the ongoing devastating war that broke out last year.
Six months of civil war which has destroyed everything in South Sudan at least €500 million of the Dutch government’s development aid went missing and more than ten years of diplomacy failed to erode political support for any further aid to the fledgling state, said a paper presented by Tom Buitelaar and Jill Coster van Voorhout before The Hague Institute for Global Justice.
The money that went missing initially allocated towards (re-)construction of state institutions and civil society as well as strengthening of governance, peace building and security measures is likely much less than the cited sum, said the paper.
According to the paper, the two researchers suggested that funding South Sudan should be given only indirectly such as via the UN system and large multilateral programs as the only way out of the crisis.
Certainly, Western countries treat Sudan alike. During the signing of the comprehensive Peace Agreement between the Government of Sudan and Sudan Liberation Movement Naivasha, Kenya in 2005, many Western countries and United States promised to lift sanctions on Sudan and cancel its foreign debts, but so far none of these promises have been fulfilled.
Sudan is need for the western support as equally as the as the support rendered to South Sudan where this generous support went with the wind.
Sudan has committed to all the agreements, the newborn state has been less committed to demarcation of borders.
