The thing you may want to pay attention to is that the Constitution prohibits the Federal Government from trampling on the rights of the Indivdual. Something Conservatives continue to ignore..right to this day. The "Patriot" Act and "Enhanced" Interrogation are clear examples of that.

Part of the beauty of the Constitution is it's "Scalability". It's pretty much remained intact for several centuries. The government was much smaller at the time the Constitution was written and the founders probably imagined a smaller government than the one we have now. But the Constitution is flexible and some people have used it to expand government.
