Want a "booming economy"?

And that reference to being a Conservative and hating tariffs? Was it not 1981 when the "voluntary" import quotas were put in place? A Reagan year? When were they lifted? Under Clinton?

The name yelling is pretty silly buddy. I totally follow your theory on tariffs. Just making conversation. I even feel retalitory tariffs are to be expected. None the less our founding fathers used high tariffs to boost our fledgling industires and I believe Japan and China have done so last century.

Wait buddy, read carefully. Do you agree Japanese cars have caught up with American cars in quality since the 70's?

the best source,Consumer Reports, says they are better and have been for 25 years.

Do you agree Japan made it difficult for U.S. cars to be imported?

they still make it very very difficult

Am I incorrect about these things?

yes, and???????????????

Well then, you agree that Japanese auto manufacturers got better while being protected by a protectionist Tariff system?

all agree but so what???????????????????????????????????????????

"all agree but so what???????????????????????????????????????????"

OK.

So we agreed Japanese car companies grew to make at least equal (you claimed superior) products under a protectionist system.

Why do you think tariff's or other protectionist actions won't work here like it did in Japan?

(there are legitimate answers btw, we have to be careful.)

as I said the tariffs are not temporary. Consumer Reports says their cars are far superior and yet the tariffs stay. One has nothing to do with the other. Is this really over your head?

Edward, so if the United States put up permanent tariffs then it would help American car companies?

Or are you saying if Japan lifted its tariffs the superior (your view) products of Honda and Toyota would loose out to imported GM's??

Edward, so if the United States put up permanent tariffs then it would help American car companies?

it would destroy them as it would free them from competition, it would also impoverish Americans with the high prices and lower quality, it would start a trade war, and it would make America a less than world class country.

Or are you saying if Japan lifted its tariffs the superior (your view)[ too stupid, Consumer Reports view not ever challenged by US companies] products of Honda and Toyota would loose out to imported GM's??

why would they lose out if American products are generally inferior???

why would they lose out if American products are generally inferior???

So then it seems we agree the tariffs helped the Japanese auto manufacturers and lifting or not lifting them will make no difference.
**************************************

Now the situation is different in America you feel, instead of helping our car companies/Americans tariffs would hurt. Please explain to me why?

I'll give you a starting point, retaliatory tariffs.

Just like most Americans and our President and Congress---Toronado has no clue at all about what we need to do.He does not want a booming economy. He does not even want an economy in which we are not drowning in debt.I wonder if he was one of the illierate voters" that is being talked about that was responsible for Obama getting re-elected?

Settle down! My apologies if I said anything smart assed. Sometimes I come off that way.

Pick a point in my reply and tell me why you disagree. Then perhaps I'll change my mind or understand your view better.

Oh... How about your closing statement: I really love Mexican Americans. They come here and are hungry. I would rather deport those who inherit wealth or are living off the greatest generation. Too many failure to launch white boys out there. So you think people who come here illegally should take precedence over AMERICANS who have worked hard and taken care of their own families? You think that a successful parent has no business passing their own personal wealth which they worked hard for on to their own children? You would rather redistribute the wealth that obviously white family you speak of earned in a good old fashioned Socialist "it's in the interest of the people" methodology... Give me a fucking break. Get a fucking job, and keep your fucking fingers out of other people's wallets. Failure to launch white boys indeed. You entitlement mental midgets make me sick.

what??? it would make a huge difference to American companies as it would open up a new market of 100 million, for example!!

Now the situation is different in America you feel, instead of helping our car companies/Americans tariffs would hurt. Please explain to me why?

too stupid!!! a tariff frees you from competition. Do you disagree that competition makes you better??????????? Is something wrong with you???

Ey, call me a crazy "best for America" type of guy. I love hungry people who work hard and dislike those who slack off.

Perhaps it is a bit of me being selfish as well. I want this America thing to keep working, it is probably the best place in the world to live. SO, to keep my standard of living up I want to keep the wheels a churning.

Edward, stay with me.

One reason the U.S. has to be careful about tariffs is because we are still the big boys on the block and other countries will (have) ganged up on us when we issue them.

I was making a point for your "no tariff for America case" to get you rolling. There is a reasonable debate to be had.

**************************************************

Also you have agreed Japan had (you said has, I guess they do) a pretty rough tariff system against imported autos. Then you keep stating Japanese car companies make better and American car companies make inferior products despite our open market.

Do I mis-understand?

****************************************************

It's ok to see a tariff working one place and believe it will not work another. Situations can not be exactly the same.

The only people in America who are starving are people with helpless addictions, and they can still find help if they choose to. The so called poor in America can fill a shopping cart right to the top thanks to their EBT cards and the generosity of our working Taxpayers. America has the most obese starving people on the planet, and they didn't get that way diving into dumpsters.

Edward, stay with me.

you're going in circles and don't know it

One reason the U.S. has to be careful about tariffs is because we are still the big boys on the block and other countries will (have) ganged up on us when we issue them.

one reason??? what ?? there are many reasons all countries have to avoid tariffs One reason?? what the hell are you talking about???

I was making a point for your "no tariff for America case" to get you rolling. There is a reasonable debate to be had.

rolling???? on free trade?????? what are you talking about????? What exactly is your point????????

Also you have agreed Japan had (you said has, I guess they do) a pretty rough tariff system against imported autos. Then you keep stating Japanese car companies make better and American car companies make inferior products despite our open market.

Do I mis-understand?

dear its obvious to any ninny who reads Consumer Reports that Jap care are better and they have a tariff. AND??????????????????

It's ok to see a tariff working one place and believe it will not work another.

why not say where tariffs work??????????????????????????

Situations can not be exactly the same.

what the hell????? did someone say situations are exactly the same?????????????????

Edward, settle down, I am just agreeing with you. Lets keep it simple.

You said Japanese cars are better.
You said Japanese cars got better during a time of protectionist tariff's in Japan.

right?

Edward, settle down, I am just agreeing with you. Lets keep it simple.

You said Japanese cars are better.
Consumer Reports said they were better and the American companies could not disagree!!!

You said Japanese cars got better during a time of protectionist tariff's in Japan.

right?

I also said Hungarian cars got worse.

Ok then. If tariffs helped Japan but hurt Hungary we should figure out why. Is Hungary politically stable? Is Japan special for any reason? Which is America's position more similar to?

(Hungary is not a topic I am very well versed in. Talk away)

Current Russian cars are the same quality as Hungarian cars. Makes for interesting reading. There is nothing to figure out. Putting someone on welfare or a tariff is a big negative as it frees them from competition and impoverishes those who must pay the higher prices and endure the lower quality. We have free trade now mostly because it is the one thing economists can agree on.

Do you feel like a silly liberal for picking the least winable debate in all of economics?? See why we must conclude that a liberal must be slow? Sorry
