Another Quebec Wal-Mart gets union

"One of the more disturbing statistics to turn up during the last seven years (one that had nothing to do with Iraq, New Orleans, the trade deficit, government surveillance, subprime loans, criminal cronyism, $100-a barrel oil, recession, et al) was the report that, while only 12% of the workforce is unionized, a whopping 60% of America's workers have indicated that they'd be "interested" in belonging to a labor union."

David Macaray: Labor Unions Will Never Get a Fair Shake

David Macaray: Are Labor Unions Ready for Prime Time?

"With more than 3,600 Wal-Mart stores in the U.S. to choose from, and despite bringing to bear all the financial and strategic resources at its disposal, the mighty House of Labor couldn't persuade a single one of the giant retailer's stores to join the union. Not one store. That's not just disappointing, that's scary."

Unionizing the industrialize United States made the middle class possible.

The deunionization and deindustrialization of the United States (made possible by the idiotic policy of blind free traderism) is what is is killing this nation.

The above is the REAL root cause of our current economic meltdown.

If the middle class was actually making a living none of these economic problems we have now would have ever manifested.

belonging to a union while working at wal-mart is so fucking pathetic, good gawd wal-mart as a career? lol too fucking funny! grow a brain and see wal-mart jobs for what they are, stepping stones to something better somplace else. wal-mart is nothing more than foot in the door jobs for young people, or time filler jobs for the elderly.

if you work at wal-mart and need a union, youre one pathetic son of a bitch!

There's a very simple equation here that might help you understand the issues.

1. Highly specialised skills are in high demand, persons with those skills are small in number and can demand high levels of payment for their highly specialised skills. They are in a position of power when placed in a bargaining position with a buyer of those skills.

2. Unskilled workers are legion. There are many people offering unskilled labour, so much so that a buyer can bargain right down to the minimum legislated wage for unskilled labour. The buyer is in a position of power when placed in a bargaining position with those offering unskilled labour.

In 1. even individuals with highly specialised skills can and do act in a form of guild behaviour. Take doctor's professional associations as one example.

In 2. the only ability unskilled workers have in that state is to collectively bargain with an employer. That collective bargaining process is facilitated by a union.

It seems that many Wal-Mart workers fall into 2. Therefore they need a union to protect their interests.

bullshit, all a union would do is take its own slice out of the workers check, fuck unions!

Unions are necessary to ensure fair treatment in the workplace and fair wages.

If you work at Wal-Mart (or any similar retail store), you deserve minimum wage. If you make above minimum wage, consider yourself lucky.

My first job (at a similar retail store), I was told during orientation I was getting a 5% increase in pay every six months. I didn't get any increases. Several months into my job, I transferred from being a floor salesperson to working in the Post Office (within the same store). Doing so, I was entitled to an extra 50 cents/hr on top of what I already make by Canada Post. I never got that either.

So even though I'm being screwed over and still making minimum wage two years later, I don't require a union because this is a temporary job for me before I move onto lab work. I make enough money to pay for my school.

Most retail companies won't treat their employees particularly well, but certainly not bad enough to warrant a union. Any grievances can be taken care of with a complaint to Human Resources. Problem solved.

I'm in favour of unions, but not for retail workers. A retail worker is at the bottom of the totem pole. If your job can be replaced by a kid still in high school who can barely tell his left from his right, you deserve minimum wage.

Fatality, I think, has it correct. By retail workers joining a union, a big slice of their already small paycheque goes to union fees when they don't actually need a union.

Now if we were talking about - say - construction workers. Then we are in business for unions. Construction workers can and often do work in unsafe conditions and need unions to protect them if they refuse work because of it. They need fair pay for their back-breaking work. A union for construction workers makes sense. Not for retailers.

So it appears you have some experience in matters relating to unions. You probably feel that everyone should represent themselves in a courtroom also. As for "only getting a slice of the paycheck" I'm sure you have done your research and have dozens of examples of a trade or working groups that take home less because of having union representatives than a comparable group of workers that have no union affiliation.

Please provide these examples..seeing as how you are educated and expert and everything. Or are you more likely to be an ignorant blowviating bag of gas?
