USDA Awarded $247K to ‘Help Develop a Pecan Snack’
May 19, 2016 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) program that awarded $247,677 “to help develop a pecan snack” last year, is soliciting applications for awards of $44 million in grant money through July 1.
The money is being offered through the Value Added Producer Grant program (VAPG). “The VAPG program helps agricultural producers enter into value-added activities related to the processing and/or marketing of bio-based, value-added products,” the USDA website says. The USDA list of 2015 grant awards under the VAPG program includes:

$247,677 to Front Porch Pecans LLC of Georgia “to help develop a pecan snack.”

$250,000 to Calloway Farms LLC of Delaware “to expand the local market for watermelon.”

$250,000 to Goat Milk Stuff LLC of Indiana “to expand caramel sales to the online customer base, and fund a marketing campaign.”

$214,000 to Hillandale Farms Inc. of Pennsylvania “to further development a Mid-Tier Value Chain to add value to egg layer manure produced on the farm and other small farms within Central Pennsylvania.”

"The Value-Added Producer Grant program has a great track record of helping producers increase the value of products and expand their markets and customer base, strengthening rural America in the process," Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says in a USDA press release on the program.
