US high court mulls greenhouse gas limits

7 minutes ago by Chantal Valery

The US government defended its regulation of greenhouse gas emissions from power plants before the Supreme Court on Monday, after coming under attack from industry and Republicans alike.

The top court is not expected to rule until June on the policy, which requires new power plants, factories and other stationary industrial sites to use the latest energy-efficient technologies.

Republicans and energy interests argue that the rules, which have been adopted by the Environmental Protection Agency, are bad for the economy and possibly illegal.

But President Barack Obama's administration says the changes are necessary to combat global warming and are a centerpiece of US efforts to reduce air pollution.

"This is an urgent environmental problem and this is one that gets worse with time," argued Donald Verrilli, a lawyer for the Obama administration.

Personally, I'd keep investing in tech and methods to convert co2 into other elements.

And your buddy Obama is opposed to Nuclear as are the rank and file Democratic legislators.

Sadly, you're right. At least they're willing to fund fusion research that could lead to a future of cheaper, reliable energy. Nuclear is something they won't accept....Major downfall.

Wind and solar will never power the world. I have nothing against it but that's just reality.

At present, fusion is still a dream. Fission works well, but is very expensive, and has major drawbacks if anything at all goes wrong. Murphy's law is real. Solar, wind, geo-thermal, and slow current and tidal, are all viable and good alternatives where they are available.

It will be a mix, not a silver bullet, that we use for the power generation of the future. Fusion is the only solution that looks like it could do the whole job, but thus far, is still dream.

There was an experiment about a month ago that used lasers to fuse hydrogen atoms and create a fusion reaction. The energy input was much high than the output but it was nice to see them advancing, even if just a little.
