US Civil War: Fed vs. states

Hardly relevant at all. The States held Far More power before the Civil war, and were not nearly as subjugated by the Fed as they are to day. Not nearly as Dependent. In fact it was the other way around back then. The Fed was Dependent on the states to even raise an army.

Today we have a Fed that has all but took away a States ability to Defend itself at all.

It's very relevant as a response to the comment it's directed at. Of course the states held more power ... there was NO legal reason they could not secede until 1868 -- after the fact where the US Government covered its ass.

Yep, and though great things came of the Civil war. Slavery Ended. We Became a powerful Nation not a weak Group of States. We also Lost something important, and set off down a course of weaker and weaker states and a stronger and stronger FED. Until we reached today where I wonder if we are even a Federal Republic at all anymore.

Heaven and Hell, North and south, War and Peace go go go :)

You really don't understand America do you? The Government did not have anything to do with the Railroads. It was the railroads that were buying right of ways.
Ma Bell not the government started the communcation system in America Dams and the power grid all done by private ventures not the government.

Good start..

Now imagine if each railroad had to negotiate state by state, each with a separate gauge requirement, each with different safety and engineering standards. Same with communications and power grids. If each state developed its own standards for switching and routing you could have never developed and integrated network.
Train gauges where set by the 1830s
Power distribution was worked out between Westinghouse and GE.

And the time zones we have now were an invention of the Railroads to keep schedules.

Missed that little thing called the US Civil War, did you?

Yes and that settled the issue..

There is no way a state could survive on its own anymore. Too many services are provided by the federal government. A state breaking out on its own would have to reconstitute all services and protections provided by the central government

That was then, this is now. The issue was settled by a bunch of liberal pussies in Congress and the Supreme Court, and a President acting unconstitutionally. You want to keep going, or get back in your corner?

Fuck the leftwingnut, socialist central government. Y'all are pussies. Try growing a set and acting like fucking men, huh?

Thank you for your informative and well researched post.

However, it was settled a long time ago. There is no way a state could reasonably secede from the union right now. They would have to reconstitute the military, a monetary system, none of their citizens would receive Social Security or Medicare or Veterans benefits.

The citizens of the state would rebel when they see what they have lost

Been there...done that

States lost

Since that time, the US has become the most powerful country on earth

they only want the states b/c they think the states will let them have government supported religion, ban abortion and gay marriage and go back to segregation.

someone needs to tell them that there's a reason we dumped the articles of confederation.

and yes, states lost. waaaaaah...

150 years and they're still whining.

You want to hear conservatives whine...let them live in a country ruled by the states.

Let them see what their taxes would be if the states had to do everything the Federal Government does

Why is it that when so-called "Patriotic" right-wingers don't get their way, they immediately start talking about treason?

Good work right-wingers! Nice of you to show your true colors.

What a bunch of traitors.

supporting a President that does not protect the Constitution is not being patriotic. You gage a president on how he views the constitution.

You think there are not lazy people in your state?

You want your fellow citizens to die? How barbaric

Show a single action by President Obama that has been ruled to be Unconstitutional

Just because Glenn Beck says so doesn't make it so

Civil War would never happen. Think of all of those Southerners who have to choose between SEC football and revolt. I don't know about you, but I choose football.

No they didn't. Most of the land was federal land and they received sweetheart deals from the feds to lay critical routes. Yes, initially standards were set by each of hundreds of individual railroads. The result was that when you moved from one rail line to another the gauge would not line up.
There were also lax safety standards (guess where? The states right south) that resulted in the loss of thousands of lives in rail disasters

OH BOY do you have it wrong. Federal lands? back when America was young in the old west their was no governmen control of lands Ranchers and settlers owned the land.

n May 1869, the railheads of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads finally met at Promontory Summit, Utah Territory.

It has been well noted in history that these two railroads were given land grants, low interest-rate loans, and direct subsidies by the federal government. The subsidies were graduated according to the difficulty of the terrain being traversed with $16,000 paid for construction over an easy grade and up to $48,000 for grades in the mountains. Additionally, changes to the Pacific Railroad Act allowed payment of subsidies for grading which could extend as far as 300 miles ahead of the tracks being laid.
