The UNSC expressed concern over the boiling situation in the region of Abyei as a result of South Sudan Dinka Ngok tribes' conduction of a unilateral referendum on the status of Abyei, a move rejected by Sudan ruling party. A statement issued by the council yesterday demanded the parties concerned to refrain from taking any unilateral step which culminates in the escalation of tension.
In his turn, the NCP spokesperson said the party political office discussed the issue and rejected the unilateral conduction of the referendum. The spokesperson affirmed that the said referendum was opposed to the recent understandings between Sudan and South Sudan, in addition to regional and international agreements on the region. He commended South Sudan government rejection of unilateral referendum, adding," the solution should be between Sudan and South Sudan governments along the lines of references agreed by them in the comprehensive peace agreement."
In a related context, Sudan chairman of the committee supervising Abyei met with the UNISFA office in Khartoum and discussed with them a number of issues relating to the region. "The meeting focused on the speedy formation of the region's agreed civil institutions, ensuring safe Misseiriya grazing South of Abyei, as well as exercise of self-restraint and friendly behavior towards the UNISFA forces," he was quoted as saying. He further added that the Misseiriya have presented a protest memo to the UNISFA chief who expressed concern over Dinka Ngok move which, according to him, would spread anarchy in the region.
It is interesting to note that Dinka Nagok nine clans living in Abyei began balloting on the referendum last Sunday, with more than ( 100,000) voters registered to vote on the region's status. In response, the Messaryia tribes rejected the referendum, threatening of storming the town of Abyei in the event Dinka Nagok vote for annexation of the region to South Sudan.
In a related development, the commissioner of the unilateral referendum, as quoted by the Jazeera TV, said they would immediately start vote-counting after the closure of voting process, and results would be announced on the 31st of current month.
