I am an avid CSPAN watcher, for starts.

a great place to watch the sausage being made, and hear the debates directly from the critters mouths.

Washington Journal every morning has been a standard in my house for over 17 years now.

Concerning international things: The news of someone who does not have a dog in the fight.

Concerning national things: Well, I lived in the East German Republic, and beeing able to read between the lines did not become any less important.

 DiveCon got it. There isn't one. The best choice would be to look at a variety of news sources and make a judgment based off that with your own common sense and thinking.

gotta read between the lines on reports
and check for a bias or motive for the report

The disinformation campaign by the right has been really effectively at lowering the quality of American media.

They haven't. We have a media environment today were you've got sources like Fox with an extreme bias toward the right and sources like the networks who are called "liberal" even though they're pretty balanced on average, and where balance doesn't exist, it's always in favor of the right.
