Well, Russia is primarily to blame. They were the country that essentially invaded another country, set up an illegitimate vote that they could vote on.

However, I am personally in favor of self determination. Perhaps the ethnic Russians would have been happier had the Ukraine not been the sick man of Europe. However this is neither here nor there.

Had the Ukraine and Russia come to a deal on the Ukraine giving the people of the Crimea a vote on where there wanted to be, either Ukraine, Russia or independent, then it could have been a good outcome. However Russia didn't do that and they have caused problems, hatred and strife for many years to come.

Putin has a history of going in and destabilizing places. He's done it in Georgia and in Moldova as well as the Ukraine and he knows no one is going to stop him.
