Absolutely. BBC and al Jazeera are both good sources, although BBC tends to lean to the left and al Jazeera is Muslim-centered.

Personally, I get most of my breaking news from one of several law-enforcement/military related discussion boards. Many of the members are active duty or working in the defense industry, so they're usually the first people to figure out what's happening long before the networks pick up on the story.
