At least 853 migrants died trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border unlawfully in the past 12 months, making fiscal year 2022 the deadliest year for migrants recorded by the U.S. government, according to internal Border Patrol data obtained by CBS News.

The figure, which far exceeded the previous record of 546 migrant deaths recorded by Border Patrol in fiscal year 2021, is likely an undercount due to data collection limits, migration policy analysts said. An April report by a federal watchdog found that Border Patrol did not collect and record "complete data on migrant deaths."

Two dead bodies have been found in the Rio Grande River - one of which was stuck in a floating border erected by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

Mexican officials are working to identify the remains of the two people. One was found jammed in the floating barrier across from Eagle Pass in Texas Wednesday.

A second body was found three miles upriver, away from the buoys that form the floating border. No cause of death has been given for either victim.

Mexico's Foreign Ministry issued a statement to confirm the discovery yesterday and to once again criticize the barrier.

The discovery of the remains in the floating border proves its construction is a 'violation' of Mexico's sovereignty and attack on the rights of those crossing the river.
'We express our concern about the impact on the human rights and personal safety of migrants that these state policies will have, which run counter to the close collaboration between our country and the federal government of the United States,' the statement said.
