There is a God-sized hole in America that is being filled by drugs, sexual immorality and abortion

The problem with longing for a return to a 'golden age' is that golden ages don't actually exist.

If anyone claims that anytime in the past was superior to the world today, I have only one word ...

dentistry.

We have better dentistry but now we rip our own babies apart limb by limb in the womb, by the millions, and call it a "woman's right to choose".

I think it's the labeling of what is good and right, and wrong and evil, that shows how far we've fallen. Everyone knows a bad tooth is horrid. It used to be that everyone knew that ripping a baby apart limb by limb and having it sucked out of your womb was horrid, too.

Many evangelicals have been openly advocating and actively usurping positions of authority in government for decades with the expressed intent to change laws, dictate national policy, harass gays and take over the world for Jesus of course, because they just love him to death,.How is someone supposed to pay no attention to that?

I regularly advocate to marry a big-breasted blonde ... my invocations have significantly better odds of coming true than theirs.

In this life, you don't fear who wants to do you harm. You fear who CAN do you harm.

If you think evangelicals will ever wield power in this country outside of their very small group of followers,. then you haven't been paying attention to American History.

We don't like being told what to do, even by those claiming to represent G-d.

Morals are a standard agreed upon. Morals are only as relevant as what the public agrees they are. If you think it shows that you are moral because you get married before having sex then you are really just a prude.

Actually, prostitution thrived more in the 19th century than it does now:

In the 19th century, parlor house brothels catered to upper class clientele, while bawdy houses catered to the lower class. At concert saloons, men could eat, listen to music, watch a fight, or pay women for sex. Over 200 brothels existed in lower Manhattan. Prostitution was illegal under the vagrancy laws, but was not well-enforced by police and city officials, who were bribed by brothel owners and madams. Attempts to regulate prostitution were struck down on the grounds that regulation would be counter to the public good. Seventy-five percent of New York men had some type of sexually transmitted disease.[2]

The gold rush profits of the 1840s to 1900 attracted gambling, crime, saloons, and prostitution to the mining towns of the wild west. A brothel-keeper, Julia Bulette, who was active in the mining town of Virginia City, Nevada, was murdered in 1867. Thirty years before, in 1836, the New York City courtesan Helen Jewett was murdered, by one of her customers gaining prostitution considerable attention. The Lorette Ordinance of 1857 prohibited prostitution on the first floor of buildings in New Orleans.[3]Nevertheless, prostitution continued to grow rapidly in the U.S., becoming a $6.3 million business in 1858, more than the shipping and brewing industries combined..

When people harken back to how wonderful it all used to be, I think of the 1800s and Asian women. They kept them in small cages, drugged up on opium, and they were abused over and over and over, multiple times a day. Until they died, sometimes of self-inflicted causes, sometimes of syphilis and other diseases. Just awful.

Humanity is often heartbreaking.

Marking my posts as "funny" really doesn't accomplish anything!!! If you have something to say, say it!!! How can we have a discussion when you are afraid to speak your mind!!!
Actually it does.

It indicates to others that your posts are as wrong as they are ridiculous – completely devoid of merit.

In this case your thread premise fails as a confusion of correlation and causation fallacy: your incorrect perception that America having become ‘godless’ is the cause of various ‘social ills’ – when in fact nothing could be further from the truth.

Neither Christians in particular nor theists in general have a ‘monopoly’ on morality – those free from religion are just as moral, if not more so.

Drug abuse, abortion, and prostitution have always existed – even in times of authoritarian piety and in places with authoritarian Christian regimes.

It's not the sin itself but the endorsement of sin that degrades a society completely.

Now we think it's all just fine, no matter what terrible consequences result. Single parenthood, divorce, even pornography and certainly abortion are having horrible effects. But oh well, "you do you", and everyone shrugs. THAT is the problem. It's not that people sin despite their best intentions and that they know it's wrong. Again it's the ENDORSEMENT of sin.

The actual threat to America is this sort of rightwing reactionaryism and religious authoritarianism.

I'm not seeing a lot of religious authoritarianism in the US these days ... Thank G-d

All the authoritarianism is coming from the crowd here, actually.

Yes I did. What part of MI do you live in, since I answered your question. Dearborn? Metro Detroit?

When most people prayed daily, did their best to obey the Ten Commandments, and went to church on Sunday, we did not have all these problems!!!

Sure we did. We just didn't talk about them.

We had nearly one million drug addicts out of a population of less than 100 million in 1900. The situation was so bad they created the FDA to control all the people selling cocaine laced snake oil to people as feel good cures.

We had just as many abortions before Roe v. Wade as after.

and the only difference in the past is not that men weren't fucking around on their wives (they were), it was that wives back then just kind of accepted it because they didn't have other options like earning hteir own money and kicking the guy to the curb.

I'm old enough to remember when everyone had lots of kids!!! There were kids everywhere up and down the street!!! Now, you hardly ever see kids!!! Abortion and birth control has ruined our families and ruined our country!!!

So let's look at that. Yes, birth control means you can have sex without risking pregnancy every time... oh, the horror.

But then you have to ask why people are having less kids.

Used to be, in my Dad's generation, you could get out of High school or return from a stint in the Army, get a good union job, make enough to support a family, and a wife who can stay at home with the kids.

Today, you have to get a bachelor's degree to get even an entry level job, you are burdened down with lots of student debt, both halves of the couple have to work, and making babies gets pushed off into the late 20's or 30's.

Then you sure picked a God awful role model.

And people prayed more, and gave more to charity, and went to church, and there weren't so many women having abortions and giving birth out of wedlock!!!
Back then every man had a job that paid enough to raise a family. GM was the largest employer in America. Today Walmart is.

There are casualties in the women’s liberation movement too. But do women want to go back to the way things were?

So humans are evolving or changing because remember evolving doesn’t always mean change for the better

Whoa---sorry, do not project YOUR belief system on ME. YOU are the people who idolize stupid politicians...WE do not. He is no role model. Not one stupid, hapless politician is. You all think so, but that's YOUR problem, not ours.

The magical arts is a funny thing.

There is no eye in team.

we're number one!

Get people to believe that subservience to men is obedience to God and the next thing you know you have a pack of salivating gung ho dogs happy to violate civil rights, crack some skulls, throw a beating, accuse the innocent, torture a suspect, lying, cheating, and stealing in the name of the Lord day in and day out all for a pat on the head, a gold plated badge, and a chewy treat from their handlers.

And they love being told what to do because when they try to think, nothing happens.

How big a hole is god-sized? Like dime? A quarter?

I heard that God size is huge but the only way to enter his realm is through a hole as big as the eye of a God sized needle.

Its a good thing that humans are very tiny. some may actually get through.
