BBC NEWS | Science & Environment | Earth population 'exceeds limits'

There are already too many people living on Planet Earth, according to one of most influential science advisors in the US government.

Nina Fedoroff told the BBC One Planet programme that humans had exceeded the Earth's "limits of sustainability".

Dr Fedoroff has been the science and technology advisor to the US secretary of state since 2007, initially working with Condoleezza Rice.

Under the new Obama administration, she now advises Hillary Clinton.

"We need to continue to decrease the growth rate of the global population; the planet can't support many more people," Dr Fedoroff said, stressing the need for humans to become much better at managing "wild lands", and in particular water supplies.

Pressed on whether she thought the world population was simply too high, Dr Fedoroff replied: "There are probably already too many people on the planet."

Yep. Any volunteers to rectify the situation?

I think anyone who thinks there are too many people living on the earth should put their money where there mouth is and off themselves.

The attitude of these people are, as PJ O'Rourke put it, "Just enough of me, waaaaaay too much of you."

I say we get rid of Liberals. They make the planet smell bad anyway.

Naw, just let all you Conservatives follow ol' Limp Rushbaugh's example and give all of you all the drugs you desire.

Ah, so you're a liberal. I'm am, too! Except that I'm a classical liberal. If you don't know what that is, just look at the Founders of the United States. We've got too many people who depend on big government. I say cut 'em lose.

Good idea. I assume that you have your own source of water, and a septic tank. That you do not use public roads or transportation of any sort. And that you have sufficient weopons to defend this nation against all enemies? And sufficient testing equipment to ensure that the food you purchase is not contaminated?

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF JOE REPUBLICAN

[Editor's note: This is an email that has floated around the internet since at least 2004. As many of us prepare our state and federal tax forms and pay our taxes, we should think about some things we take for granted.]

Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of water, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to ensure their safety and that they work as advertised.

All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - now Joe gets it too.

He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.

Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for the laws to stop industries from polluting our air.

He walks on the government-provided sidewalk to subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe's employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union.

If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

It is noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime. Joe also forgets that his in addition to his federally subsidized student loans, he attended a state funded university.

Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards to go along with the tax-payer funded roads.

He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers' Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans.

The house didn't have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification.

He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to.

Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day. Joe agrees: "We don't need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I'm a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have."

My belief is that the planet can still support more people, but not many more. I don't believe we can afford to double the population again. Many countries are already beginning to reduce their populations. For the most part, only the poorer countries continue to grow.

Here is something to think about concerning population growth that does not revolve around the obvious. Economies have grown throughout history based on the growth in the population. When we reach the point that our population stops growing and possibly even begins to decline, what will it mean for us economically? Conservatives always state that the way to improve the lives of those who are less fortunate is to build a growing economy, so that the pie gets bigger and everyone benefits. They also tend to believe that liberals want to redistribute wealth based on the idea that the pie can't grow, and the only way to improve the quality of life of those less fortunate is to redistribute that wealth. I don't quite buy into the second part, but I do believe the best opportunities are created for everyone by growing the economy.

My question is, how will we grow the economy when we begin to realize a shrinking or stabilized population and will this change the way we approach our economic goals completely?

True conservatives should forgo Medicare and Social Security if they really want to prove a point and adhere to their conservative values.

Pressed on whether she thought the world population was simply too high, Dr Fedoroff replied: "There are probably already too many people on the planet."

Here's the deal. Conservatives only answer to this is "abstinence only" education, which is empirically proven not to work.

The liberal solution has always been to promote family planning, including access to contraception and abortion services. Promoting equality and education for women, since its a proven fact that societies where women are relatively equal to men are stable, and have less children. In short, things that cons have fought tooth and nail against. Cons are against funding family planning, agains plan b contraception, against comprehensive sex education, and cons have a long history and tradition of either oppossing women's equality or standing in the way of women's rights. At a minimum, they were nowhere to be found in any of the historical struggles that empowered women.

We only have too many people to live in the manner to which most of us have become accustomed.

If we could only convince six billion or so of us that living indoors and eating regularly wasn't something they should come to expect, then things would be fine.

Those selfish starving people in the third world (and America).

Don't they understand that we need all the world's resources for ourselves?

Why are they so selfish?
