Actually Detroit's problem is four fold.

Actually blaming a president 30 years removed seems pretty damn pathetic. What is more to the point and was actually predicted is the damage that Clinton did to America. Reagan ushered in the greatest peace time expansion of the economy ever, Clinton with his free trade agreements, that were not free, killed it.

The results of Clinton's policy was predicted and came true, there is no denying it.

The UAW, when they forced the US auto industry into paying wages and benefits that were not in line with the skills required for the jobs, they destroyed the competitiveness of the US car industry. When they negotiated "no-layoff" contracts they took away the work ethic of the workers. Combine that with a greedy 'don"t give a shit' management, bribes to democrat politiicians and the result is a dead corrupt city.

German and Japanese autoworkers make a good wage with benefits. Their autocompanies invested in engineering and preferred long term investment to short term profits.
The Capitalists in Detroit paid multimillion dollar salaries to CEOs who gutted the manufacturing infrastructure but kept the dividends high

German and Jap cars have $2000 less of labor cost per vehicle. They dont make anywhere near what American auto workers make, on an adjusted basis. Try selling something with a $2k price disadvantage in a competitive market. But they can't help that as they are stuck with UAW contracts.

There is a vibrant auto industry in the US. It just isnt in Detroit.
Detroit was mismanaged by blacks for years, and received generous federal funds for years. The feds wouldn't prosecute corruption because it was a black Dem city.

You look at Pittsburg and you see what happens when responsible leadership runs a city.

Here is the thing: responsible leadership does not necessarily mean Republican leadership. It just means good leadership. As in the case of most American cities, Pittsburgh has not seen a Republican mayor since before the Great Depression. I'm not sure they have even had a single Republican city councilman.

Pittsburgh is actually doing OK. It is one of the top 10 places to retire and has by and large recovered from its loss of the steel industry.

Well, I think I agree with your basic point, Dont think Id say people are ignorant tho. most people lead busy lives and cant keep abreast of everything. Our system could, and should be changed to make it easier. People are loyal to partys that aren't loyal to them.

Grafting "economic development" on the part of other states also part of the problem.

Texas just paid 10000 per supposed new worker to Toyota to lure them out of California.

Some idiot state in the South paid Mercedes I think it was 100,000 per worker to build a plant there

recently some southern state actually undermined a bid for a union that Volkswagen WANTED. Doing so they screwed over their own citizens.

Democrats think you can just keep sticking it to the people and businesses when the city coffers run dry, but this kind of technique only works (up to a point) in places that have so much to offer that people are reluctant to leave, I.E. New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Portland, etc. But places like Detroit, Cleveland, Allentown, Erie, forget it. Then there are places on the riding between the two worlds like Atlanta which will go one way or the other in the next 20 years. The Olympics saved that city from certain ruin to this point, but I doubt it will last considering who is running the school system.

The smartest thing they could do in Detroit is first make the city a shall-issue concealed carry precinct, then start advertising free properties with no taxes for five years and tell the new owners they have 2nd Amendment rights like the old west. You'd get people with balls and ambition to go in there and start rebuilding, killing any useless motherfucker stupid enough to go gangsta. Shit, miles and miles of well built homes, rotting or becoming meth dens. I'd buy them, but not without moving in with a fucking army of men ready to do serious business all around.

Guy, two of the three major US Automakers required government bailouts, and one of them was acquired by the Italians.

And frankly, Pittsburgh isn't that much better off than Detroit. Neither is Cleveland, which was run by Republicans for years, and is largely a burned out husk of a city.

Now, I do take issue with OnePercerters characterization that the "Japs" were allowed to dump by Reagan. In fact, it was quite the oppossite. Reagan realized the Japanese companies were "Dumping" (i.e. selling products in the US at a discount to put American manufacturers under) and he put a stop to it. Which is why so many Japanese Car Makers opened factories in the US, using retired Big THree workers as labor.

Of course, what really gave the Japanese and German carmakers a boost was that they were developing fuel efficient cars while Detroit kept cranking out the same gas guzzlers. Which ended up really sucking when gasoline shot up.

And yet...for FORTY YEARS now, the two best-selling vehicles in the country have been "gas guzzling" full-sized pickup trucks!

If that's true why are workers at places like Toyota doing well even though they don't make union wages? of course they're employed so that probably helps. but they don't have the BS "work rules" that strangled GM. And please note it took decades for the unions to kill Detroit.....we're just enjoying the final moments as it were.

The unions did not design the cars. They did not decide where the profits went. They were not the ones who decided not to invest in modern technology. They were not the ones who decided to grossly overpay executives

They DID, however, do things like sabotage work, deliberately do things wrong, and basically slack off because they KNEW they couldn't be punished for it! I saw a truck that left the factory with a glove jammed between the bed & frame! I saw trash (including the stub of a joint!) under carpet. I saw an engine built with a piston installed backwards. GM had to repaint a few dozen Camaros in the early-70's after a worker pissed in a paint vat.
