The "proper" role of government

The "living Constitution" argument is a bogus argument that attempts to justify a role for nine lawyers in black robes to "update" our Constitution by making little bitty amendments that, over time, amass into major change.
And just what do you our elected officials do?

If you can change it, it's living. If you can't, the Declaration for instance, it's dead Jim.

Our elected officials are supposed to be legislating within the confines of the written Constitution, our our Courts are supposed to be assuring that they do so. That is the way that all contracts work.

Contracts can be changed, but only when all parties to the contract agree on the change. The US Constitution is a contract between the states and the federal government. It can only be changed by concurrance of three fourths of the states and the federal government. Otherwise, it stands as it exists.

The Declaration of Independence was never law. It was a statement of justification for the revolution.
