The Myth of 90 Percent: Only a Small Fraction of Guns in Mexico Come From U.S.

Illegal or legal, it is still easier for a Mexican to get a gun in America then it is in Mexico.

Maybe America should use Mexico's gun laws for the Mexicans in America?

You're missing the point. Non-AMerican citizens CANNOT get guns legally here. And if they could get gun's legally, they could not transport them across the border...legally. The problem with this, is that our 2nd Amendment grants us the right to bear arms....it's in the Bill of Rights. Another thing you are forgetting, is that it is easier for a Mexican to get a gun from other Central American countries than in Mexico. The Mexican justice system and military is very corrupt, which is no doubt, where many of the high powered weapons are coming from.

1. Is it true you can go to a gun show in America, buy, and take home a gun without waiting or a background check?

I heard yesterday this is possible. This is unacceptable. People who want to purchase guns need to go register themselves with their local police, just like I had to.

They want the gun shows to have laid back rules so it won't hinder their sales. Remember, all they care about are their profits. If their gun sales means 10% increase in murders, they will still defend their right to sell guns.

The DC voting rights bill is interesting. Republicans want to attach a rider to the bill that says these people should have the right to own guns. In Washington DC, where our elected leaders are.

This is not a good idea.

Anyways, the Dems refuse to attach any gun provisions to the voting rights bill because they know that someone will get shot and then the GOP will blame the Dems for it because it happened on their watch. So the Dems are not going to give in.

That doesn't mean they are anti gun. That just means that Washington DC is not a state and we have a reason for making guns illegal in that area.

Just like you can't fly planes over the White House.

But the GOP will make this an issue. Now they make the dems look like they are anti guns, but if anything happens because of this legislation, the Dems are the ones who will be blamed.

The study was the first to analyze the origin and effect of what is now known as the "gun show loophole"—the anomaly in current law that requires holders of Federal Firearms Licenses (FFLs)2 to conduct background checks on sales made at gun shows while sales made by unlicensed private individuals at such events are exempt.

The VPC study documented how the 1986 "Firearms Owners' Protection Act" (FOPA) led to the uncontrolled proliferation of gun shows—events at which private citizens and federally licensed gun dealers congregate to buy and sell firearms and related paraphernalia. The VPC's research revealed that the law has resulted in a dramatic increase in the number and size of shows, which occur in auditoriums, fairgrounds, and other outlets in almost every state on virtually every weekend of the year. The VPC's research also demonstrated that this dramatic increase was due largely to two little-noticed changes the FOPA made in the way that federally licensed firearms dealers are regulated—

The law made it legal for Federal Firearms License (FFL) holders to sell at gun shows.

The law expanded the opportunities for private citizens to buy and sell firearms at gun shows by raising the threshold of what constituted being "engaged in the business" of selling firearms for purposes of defining who must obtain a federal gun dealer's license.
The study detailed how gun shows have become a readily available source of weapons and ammunition for a wide variety of criminals—including street gangs, white supremacists, would-be presidential assassins, and domestic terrorists. The utility of gun shows to such dangerous individuals stems primarily from the exemption enjoyed by private sellers from the sales criteria of the Brady law, including a background check. This, in turn, encourages licensed dealers (FFL holders) to sell weapons without following the sales criteria of the Brady law in order to compete with unlicensed sellers.

Is it true that if you attend some gun shows or conventions you can circumvent registration and waiting periods and back ground checks and all paperwork by
buying from the tailgaters in the parking lot ? Cash and Carry. No questions asked.
Anyone every witnessed that, Or other backdoor selling of firearms by dealers ?
Should the existing firearms regulations be as strictly enforced as many places do for their automobile traffic, or would that be considerred a violation of 2nd Amendment rights ?

We have existing laws, Let's devote resources to strictly enforce them.
And we need to reduce, or outright prevent the trafficing of military grade weaponry.
To and From Mexico, and within the US.
Why do we reall citizens require access to assault rifles and grenades and rocket launchers and armor piercing bullets ?

MEXICO CITY - There is one gun store in Mexico. And it serves a very select clientele.

The store is run by the Mexican army and occupies two rooms in a heavily guarded building near the army's headquarters in Mexico City.

To shop here, customers need a permit that can take months to get. And once they buy a gun, there are limits on how much ammunition they can buy each month, where they can take the gun, who they can sell it to.

To shoppers here, the irony is clear: Mexico has some of the toughest gun-control laws in the world, yet the country's drug cartels are armed to the teeth with high-powered illegal weapons because guns are so easy to buy in the United States and smuggle over the border.

"If the United States had a system like ours, we wouldn't have so many problems here in Mexico," Agustin Villordo, 27, of Puebla, Mexico, said Tuesday as he shopped for a hunting rifle.

Maybe America should apply the Mexican gun laws of Mexico to the Mexicans in America?

The cartels are using full automatic machine guns and high power ammo! Neither is purchased legally in America! What is driving me crazy is that you constantly see pictures of Cartel members holding M16 (illegal to sell in the US), AK47 (Russian), SA-80 (British) and the Uzi (Israel)! None of these guns are purchased legally in America, yet these are what the Cartels are using!

So, does it make you wonder why our Secretary of State stood before the world and made the USA take the blame for these illegal guns when she knew it wasn't the truth.. Well, let's hope she's not that clueless! so WHY??????

You're wrong and/or lying Willow.

Did you see this reply?

This is the problem right here Willow. We need to make doing this illegal.

Why not? Because the NRA says it isn't fair? :eusa_liar:

Why isn't it fair? Can't wait to hear this.

it already IS illegal, MORON

There are some states that if you purchase a firearm (private party), there is no background check.

If you go to a gun show and buy a weapon from a dealer, there is a background check.

A Look at the Numbers

In 2007-2008, according to ATF Special Agent William Newell, Mexico submitted 11,000 guns to the ATF for tracing. Close to 6,000 were successfully traced -- and of those, 90 percent -- 5,114 to be exact, according to testimony in Congress by William Hoover -- were found to have come from the U.S.

But in those same two years, according to the Mexican government, 29,000 guns were recovered at crime scenes.

In other words, 68 percent of the guns that were recovered were never submitted for tracing. And when you weed out the roughly 6,000 guns that could not be traced from the remaining 32 percent, it means 83 percent of the guns found at crime scenes in Mexico could not be traced to the U.S.

Man are you blowing smoke. Not, that does not mean that the other 83% could not be traced to the US, it means that the other 83% were not traced, period. For those of us that value the 2nd Amendment, your support of the illegal black market in guns only makes it harder.

Because they couldn't be traced. Those AK47 and Uzis (the cartel's weapons of choice) usually don't have serial numbers attached, nor would the original serial number point to the US!

Mexico's President Cites Debunked Claim That Most Guns in Mexico Come From U.S.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Wednesday made an assertion -- cited in the past by Mexico's U.S. ambassador and even by U.S. leaders, but debunked as a myth -- that 90 percent of the weapons intercepted in*Mexico come from the U.S.

"I know that this is a very sensitive issue,"*Calderon said in an interview with NBC News. He also said that he will tell President Obama during his visit Thursday to Mexico City that the U.S. needs to clean up its drug problem if Mexico is going to be successful in its battle against the cartels.

"The source of the problem was the huge demand for drugs in the United States the largest market in the world for drugs," he said.*"The United States, you have a lot of traffic of drugs. You have a lot of distribution of drugs. You have a lot of corruption as well."

Calderon's comments came days after Auturo Sarukhan, the Mexican ambassador to the United States, appeared on CBS' "Face the Nation" and made the same claim that 90 percent of the weapons intercepted in Mexico come from the U.S.

They'll keep telling this lie until it sticks.

Yes they tell us to clean up the drug problem in the US, but then they cry like babies when we try to close off the border! Typical double talk!
