McCain did not get an early release. One of the things he is respected for by other POW's and the veterans that dislike him or are critical of him is that he refused to consider an early release or use his status for special treatment. He remained a POW held under the same conditions as all other POW's in the Hanoi Hilton until all of them were released.

McCain became the bad guy to some veterans, former POW's and relatives of MIA's because he became the "go to guy" when ever it was time to screw over Vietnam vets and especially folks connected to the POW/MIA issue. He was the go to guy for the Pentagon, the White House and the Congress. He used his former POW status and Vietnam Veteran branding to block all kinds of legislation and allow all kinds of misbehavior and cover-ups of wrong doing that frustrated and defeated veterans and MIA relatives for years.

McCain's status as the hero Vietnam vet was almost impossible to break. It was however finally broken when another hero, Command Sergeant Major John Holland began a campaign to neutralize McCain. Holland had written legislation and worked for years to get it passed and adapted as law. He wanted legislation that would give captured and missing Americans better protection and promote greater government efforts to resolve cases of missing service persons. It was very bipartisan and bureaucratic legislation and not political at all. He just wanted to make it harder for the government to abandon missing service persons. He knew a little about war and how people became missing. He was a expert some would say.

John Holland sneaked his way into the Marines at the age of 15 by using his older brothers ID. His real ID was discovered in a stateside hospital after being wounded on Guadalcanal. After recuperating from his wounds, and coming of age, he joined the Army and became a paratrooper. He served as a platoon sergeant in the Korean "POLICE ACTION" as he proudly displayed on the back of his Vietnam fatigues. He had stayed in the Army after Korea and became an early Green Beret for participation in the Vietnam "whatever", which he also proudly displayed on his fatigues. So, on the back of his shirt read, Veteran, World War II, Korean Police Action, Vietnam Whatever, USMC, US ARMY.

Holland planted himself in Washington, DC with another Command Sergeant Major, CSM Chuck Eatley, also a WWII, Korea and Vietnam Veteran and early Green Beret. Eatley had one up on Holland, actually, two up. Eatley had not left the service in WWII, and had more active duty years than Holland, and Eatley had served in Lebanon in 1958. These two old warriors dedicated the rest of their lives to fighting to bring home men that had been left behind. That is the guy, John Holland, who brought the veterans community up against McCain. With a little help from his friends.
