The GOP is crushed like a cream puff and will face angry voters in the next election for backing down to Obama.
McConnell said the economic consequences of a default would give President Obama an opportunity to blame the GOP for the countrys economic straits. Look, he owns the economy, McConnell said. Hes been in office for three years. We refuse to let him entice him into co-ownership of a bad economy.
McConnell said that at this point the GOP had two choices: Either make a bad deal from their perspective with Obama or take the country into default, which, McConnell suggested would do even more damage to the party. He compared the situation to 1995, when the GOP forced a government shutdown.

Under normal cirumstances, I would agree that running up more debt is not a problem. However, I do not foresee any drastic improvement to the economy for a very long time, no matter what we do. This is simply based on the fact that consumer spending is not going to pick back up to levels seen as baby boomers were purchasing everything under the sun. They are now finished and gearing their money towards retirement, which involves saving, not spending. That is something that no amount of tax reductions or anything else is going to change. Therefore, it is imperative that we get spending and revenues in line, and it will have to involve both spending cuts and tax increases.
The Republican idea that we can cut spending to the bone and give even more tax breaks, is not one that is going to work to jump start the economy. In fact, we've been down this road, and cutting taxes to the bone has led us to our current dilemma.
