The CRA, the repeal of Glass-Stegall

The Democrats' Road to Hell - American Thinker

among other things the demrats and some so called Republicans did to screw things up royally.

The American Stinker - yet another lying conspiracy theory website:

  • Overall, we rate the American Thinker, Questionable based on extreme right-wing bias, promotion of conspiracy theories/pseudoscience, use of poor sources, and several failed fact checks.

Glass-Seagall was repealled by the Republican Congress and signed into law by Bill Clinton in 1999.

Republicans have repeated claimed that the CRA caused the Housing Bubble. It didn't. George W. Bush's policies to boost home ownership percentages, combined with super low interest rates caused the housing bubble.

The right will say or do anything to deflect from their failed fiscal policies which have lead to three economic collapses in forty years.

Nobody denies responsibility for fucking things up like Republicans.

The Glass-Steagall Act was a piece of financial legislation that dates to the Great Depression. It was part of a broader set of regulations, known as the Banking Act of 1933, that moved to restore confidence in the banking system after thousands of bank failures in the first years of the Depression.
The provisions prohibited banks from investing in risky securities, though they could invest in government bonds. The legislation was designed to lower the risk of failure in commercial banks and help safeguard customer accounts.

Repeal allowed banks to play footloose and fancy free, bundling loans, mortgages and securities with little over site or control and swapping between the banks and investment institutions for fun and profit, with only speculation of what the real value of the securities were, leading to the Bush Crash of 2008.

This allowed all the high-powered investment banks to bundle and securitize all of the mortgage loans from across the country into asset-back securities called Collateralized Debt Obligations (CDO).

Investment banks weren't prohibited from creating securities by Glass-Steagall.
Commercial banks could also securitize mortgages under Glass-Steagall.

Which policies? Any specifics?

They didn't get in trouble from newly allowed securities or trading, they got in trouble from writing and buying crappy mortgages.

As usual you are so full BS your eyes are brown. CRA was a factor, not the only one. Repealing Glass-Stegall was a major factor along.
