U.S. Responds to Russia’s Military Escalation by Attacking Palmyra
"The recent arrival of the Russian Marines has agitated the United States (U.S.) and their allies, as the recent military build-up by both countries is reminiscent of the Cold War years in which they participated in a number of proxy wars around world.
To rival Russia’s proliferation of arms and soldiers in western Syria, the U.S. Air Force responded with a series of airstrikes over the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham’s (ISIS) positions inside the Homs Governorate cities of Al-Quraytayn and Palmyra (Tadmur) on Friday.
According to a military source inside Syria, the U.S. Air Force struck ISIS’ positions four times on Friday afternoon, targeting the terrorist group’s movements along this vast desert area inside the Homs Governorate’s eastern countryside.
These airstrikes marked the first time the U.S. Air Force has attacked ISIS inside Palmyra; however, this is not the first time they struck east Homs, as three weeks ago, the U.S. Air Force bombarded the terrorist group at the ancient Assyrian city of Al-Quraytayn.
The purpose of these U.S. airstrikes is unknown and rather peculiar due to the absence of Kurdish and rebel forces at this desert front located 50km from the provincial capital of Homs.
Oddly enough, a contingent from the Russian Marines has been deployed to the outskirts of Homs City in order to train the new recruits from the civilian-led “National Defense Forces” (NDF); these airstrikes were likely to catch their attention."
