This short piece accurately captures the reality of guns in the United States.....it is accurate and right on target....

Never Yet Melted » Gun Control and Magical Thinking

For example, we don’t really have a single America with a moderately high rate of gun deaths. Instead, we have two Americas, one of which has very high rates of gun ownership but very low murder rates, very comparable to the rest of the First World democracies such as those in western & northern Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, South Korea. The other America has much lower rates of gun ownership but much, much higher murder rates, akin to violent third world countries.

The tough questions are those like, why do we have these two Americas? But that’s an uncomfortable discussion to have.

So instead those on the left favor simple minded restrictions that target first world America, with its high gun ownership but very low murder rate, but don’t address the root causes of third world America’s violence at all.

Meanwhile those on the right correctly feel their civil rights are constantly threatened, so they are constantly in a state of “better stock up before they finally ban it” and the guns and ammo fly off the shelves. The left’s constant gun control rhetoric is the greatest thing ever for arms manufacturers.

Meanwhile, over the past 40 years, while the number of guns in private hands has doubled, the murder rate has dropped by half.

The left are constantly prattling about “assault weapons” which are almost never used to commit murders (about 1% of gun murders; all rifles combined are around 3%). More murders are committed with baseball bats than “assault rifles”; the vast majority of gun homicides are committed with handguns, but it’s easier to sell restrictions that target “assault weapons”, even though such restrictions, even if 100% effective, would make no detectable change in the murder rate (especially because of substitution effects). They favor ridiculous measures such as bans on “high capacity magazines”, as if magazines weren’t cheap and easily swapped out in a fraction of a second.

The uncomfortable fact is that roughly 80% of the US homicide rate is associated with the drug trade, and the drug trade is violent because the drug war reserves it for violent criminals.

We have a system in place where the government subsidizes poverty in urban areas, imposes economic blight in those same areas through heavy taxes and regulations, renders the residents permanently unemployable via the “criminal justice” (sic) system, and creates a lucrative black market in drugs by restricting supply (not to mention increasing demand as people are desperate to escape their circumstances by getting high), meaning the only game in town is often entering the drug trade. The drug trade is violent because those in it have no access to courts to settle disputes. Powerful industries lobby to keep the drug war going; the top spenders are law enforcement unions, the prison industry, big alcohol, tobacco, and pharma.

Guns are not the proximate cause of gun violence in the US.

Childlike magical thinking and simple “fixes” to complex problems will not work. But it is comfortable, and self-righteousness feels so good. So I expect it to continue indefinitely.”

There are more guns than people in the US, that's your actual reality my the-sky-is-falling friend.

Yes....close to 600 million guns in private hands, over 16.3 million people carrying handguns for self defense and close to 16 million semi auto, civilian, self defense rifles....

And from the 1990s as were were reaching this point.....gun crime went down 75%, gun murder went down 49%...violent crime went down 72%.

Britain banned and confiscated guns during the same time period.....and their gun crime rate went up 89%......and has continued to go up....23% just last year, and 42% in London alone....

Hmmmmm...one thing seems to lower the gun crime rate...and it isn't banning and confiscating guns...even on an island without borders easily accessible to a Narco state....

The answer to all of life’s questions is more guns, I’m utterly convinced.

No....I am pretty sure that how do you change a flat tire has no aspect that relates to using a gun to do it....

In one of your memes, it separated rifles from shotguns. Why? Because both shotguns and rifles are guns, so why are they counted differently?

And.................if they separated shotguns from rifles, then where is the number of people killed by handguns?

Because they are trying to show that Civilian self defense rifles....AR-15s are not used in a lot of crime compared to the number of law abiding gun owners who own them....that is why.

If you separate rifles out from shotguns, then you have a more accurate look at the category of rifle. You know, the category you guys keep lying about when you try to ban them....

16 million of these rifles.....and yet they are used less than knives, clubs and empty hands each year to murder people.....

Also.....you guys use mass public shootings with rifles as a way to again, call for banning these civilian self defense rifles......included in that CDC number is the number of people murdered with these rifles in mass public shootings.....

In 2016 there were 71 people murdered in mass public shootings..not all of them were with rifles....and rifles are not the most common gun type used in mass shootings.....yet you want them banned....which shows it isn't about the deaths, you just hate those rifles...

Here is a count by year....notice.....the guy in Nice, France murdered 89 people, and injured 458 with a rental truck, not one year of mass public shootings in the U.S. has had that number...........so far, rental trucks are deadlier than all the mass shootings each year.........by a lot.....

The truth....vs. the lie of omission whenever you guys fail to explain guns in this country, as you just did with that number....

Americans use guns 1,500,000 times a year to stop violent criminal attack, and to even sometimes stop mass public shooters.....

And as more Americans own and carry guns...our gun crime rate has gone down, not up....gun murder down 49%, gun crime down 75%, violent crime down 79%....that is the truth you leave out when you just post that number....

Also....you fail to show what those gun deaths are...since suicide is the biggest part of that number, yet non gun suicide outnumbered gun suicide two years in a row.....and every other year they are almost equal in number...you again lie by omission....

Here is a real breakdown of that number...

Gun suicide..

Gun suicide...

22,018

Non Gun suicide...

22,078

Gun murder ( 70-80% of the victims of gun murder are actual criminals, not law abiding people)

Suicide
So you lie....you hide what the numbers actually are...and you lie about suicide as the highest number of gun deaths...even though Japan, Korea, China, all have absolute gun control for law abiding citizens...only criminals and cops can have guns.......and they have higher suicide rates than we do....and our non-gun suicide rate has been higher than our gun suicide rate for 2 years in a row.....

Gun Accidental Death...

Gun accidents....in a country with over 320,000,000 people...... with 400,000,000 guns in private hands, and over 15,700,000 people carrying guns for self defense..... 489 accidental gun deaths....

Gun murder
Of the 9,616 gun murders in this country, 70-80% of the victims are criminals, engaged in criminal activity or part of the criminal life style....and of the remaining victims....many of them are friends and family of the criminal...caught up in the criminal's lifestyle.....
