Workers at the 103rd Armored Tank Repair Plant are tasked with retrofitting 800 crumbling Soviet-era T-62s due to Russia’s severe tank shortage.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has resorted to retrofitting hundreds of decades-old Soviet tanks to be battle-ready — as the country’s stockpile of modern tanks dwindles.

Andrey Gurulev, a member of the Russian parliament, released a video Saturday showing his recent visit to a repair plant outside the remote city of Chita that has been tasked with modernizing 800 obsolete T-62M tanks....

Some experts [mostly Russian] claim that the modernization of the T-62 may prove more effective than that of the T-72 or T-80.

The T-62 allows for easier integration of Kontakt-5 or Relikt explosive reactive armor, third-generation thermal sights [either Russian or North Korean], and possibly even new rounds for APFSDS

This tank is likely to be very effective at it's specific job against the Ukes which is infantry support/strongpoint suppression.

It will be more survivable if it has a way to use machineguns from under armor and long range thermal viewers...which it at least appears to have.

All in all, it looks like an 80% solution that is 100% maintainable and exists in quantity. That seems like a good plan.

Tanks are obsolete. If we were to lend Ukraine a few of the right air superiority toys the war would be over in a month, unless Russia resorted to nukes.

I doubt it. For our own forces? Tanks are metal coffins in a modern war.
Tell that to a Uke that has run out of Javelins to defend a strongpoint. Boom, boom, out go the lights.

Ukraine only has a handful of modern weaponry. We would not run out of javelins. Tanks are obsolete because of how far air warfare technology has come as well. You can't fight drones traveling mach 3 with a tank, and certainly not one built in the 80s

Please keep it within the context of the OP which is the Ukraine war.

The conversation called for an expansion of context. If we lent Ukraine some of the right air weaponry the war would end very quickly.

Put down the crack pipe.

The very existence of Ukraine is a gift from Vladimir Putin.

If Stalin were alive 3 or 4 FOABS on a residential neighborhood in Kiev would end this joke of a war in 2 or 3 hours... super patriotic american clowns would then be whining about his brutality instead of mocking Russia's "weakness".

Let's hope good and justice will triumph over evil and injustice, Litwin:

1 - No FOAB will be dropped not even on ukrainian troops, let alone on its civilian population.

2 - NATO will be defeated in its geopolitical aggression against Russia.

3 - The russian speaking provinces won't be under the ukrainian boot anymore.

4 - A new, independent, sovereign Ukraine, much more cohese and stable free from the burden, from the albatross of the russian speaking regions, will prosper, will thrive as a member of the european family without posing any geopolitical/military threat to Russia.

You can call me a dreamer but I still believe in happy endings : )

If this war goes on much longer, Russia may have to empty its museum of all its military antiquities.

The T 54 was built in the middle late 1940's, so does this mean Russia has nothing else in reserve later than these? Have they really lost so many tanks?
Doncha know? There are 7000 T-72's in reserve...

Incidentally, the T-62 modernization isn't really new. They made these mods and sent a few to Syria, like back in 2016/2017. They also tried to get the Libyan and Syrian armies to buy a bunch of them, and I don't know who else. They didn't have any takers.

Some of the pics going around today with the freshly painted tanks and Kontact-1 ERA are actually from 2016. The thermal sight is 1970's tech- better than nothing, but half the range of the Javelin's LWCLU.

There are still some T-34's around on pedestals, so when the T-54's are used up...
