Sudan has called on the UN to retract its condemnation of Sudan following the country's decision to expel two UN officials.

UN resident coordinator for development and humanitarian affairs, Ali Al-Zaatari and the country director of United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) Yvonne Helle were expelled by the government of Sudan on Thursday.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon demanded the government revise its decision immediately, describing it unacceptable.

A UN spokesperson told reporters that Ki-moon criticised Sudan strongly following the move.

“The UN Secretary General condemns the decision of Sudan, saying punishment of officials sending to Sudan to work due to UN charter is refused,” said the spokesperson said.

The Sudanese government issued on Friday a communiqué demanding Ki-moon revoke his condemnation, saying the officials were removed based on the Roma convention, which says the country has a right to expel any diplomat who violates the regulations without any justification.

Sudanese foreign affairs spokesperson Yousif Al-Kordofani clarified that Al-Zaatari insulted the people of Sudan and its political leaders in his interview with a Norway newspaper. The UN official denied the accusation, claiming the newspaper of changed the quote.

“We gave him enough time to prove the quote was false, but he did not,” said the spokesperson.

The government also went on to explain the motivation behind the expulsion of UNDP country director Yvonne Helle.

“Her removal was due to many reasons, first she rejected a number of developmental projects Sudan could benefit from in terms of economy, politic, second, she changed the strategic plan without informing the government, alongside changing the priorities adopted by the government of Sudan,” said the statement.

"What Sudan did is within its dignity and sovereignty rights," added Al-Kordofani who cited that Sudan is a UN member that contributes to realising peace and security among all other countries.
