North Korea staged a farewell rally on Friday for a South Korean pastor and unification activist returning home after an unauthorized trip to the communist state that lasted for nearly 70 days, official media reported.

Rev. Han Sang-ryol entered the North by air on June 12 and has since made speeches denouncing South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and praising the communist regime. His actions are considered violations of the South's laws that restrict trips to the North and contact with North Koreans, and police officials in Seoul say Han will be arrested upon his return.

"Holding the flag of unification after the rally, Rev. Han Sang-ryol set out for Panmunjom while being cheered by the crowd," the North's Korean Central News Agency said in a report from Pyongyang.

Senior North Korean officials handling relations with the South attended the rally, the report said, but it was unclear how many were present.

North Korea's Red Cross urged the South earlier this month to treat Han in a humanitarian manner upon his return home. Han, who met with North Korea's nominal head, Kim Young-nam, earlier this week, is a member of a progressive group of unification activists here.

Hundreds of his fellow activists gathered at a train station near the border with North Korea to hold a rally welcoming him, police said. Hundreds of others from conservative groups also flocked to a nearby area to denounce Han.
