That's a clue that the debt holder is just a serf for life to the government sponsored debt. The student loan generation was shafted by the government and Big Academia. Loans were handed out without any regard for the market value of the expected degree. Shameful.

The problem with the cost of education is how easy it is to get Student Loans. Anyone can afford to go to school for anything and borrow money guaranteed by Uncle Sam to do it.

One thing they need to do is to really review and underwrite the loans. If someone want money for tuition to study Lesbian Poetry or Black Studies, they should be turned down unless they have worthy cosigners and/or good collateral to guarantee repayment. The standard for loaning money for someone to study Mechanical Engineering or Proctology should be easier, as there are good jobs available in those fields.

You want to get the costs of college down, get govt money out of it. Colleges charge what they can get away with, as long a the govt guarantee loans without question, the sky is the limit.
