The reasons against fighting Russia are less that they have equivalent weapons, or soldiers. It is that you can’t win. Invading the US would be impossible. With a hundred million armed people, you would face at least half that many as people taking pot shots at you from the bushes and trees. Even if you had enough people to occupy the nation, you would never subdue it.
The reverse is also true. There is no way we can occupy Russia. It’s too large, to spread out, and too inhospitable. Occupying Siberia would be like trying to populate Alaska. Limited resources to support the troops, limited ability to resupply, or reinforce the troops. It would be virtually impossible. I mean, for decades China who has far more people than either Russia or the US, has had the ability to invade and occupy Siberia, but then what? They would bankrupt themselves trying to resupply the troops.
In a conventional war, it would be a draw, at best. If it went Nuclear, then it wouldn’t matter who won, because there wouldn’t be enough people left to enjoy the victory. Even if we had a Missile Shield that could stop 80% of the incoming warheads, the remaining 20% would certainly render a vast majority of our cities, and that also means our lines of communication, uninhabitable. So roads would be cut, bridges would be inaccessible, and even if we had food west of the Mississippi to send east, or materials in the east to send north, it wouldn’t matter, they couldn’t get there.
We would be reduced to sustenance farming. Something we haven’t done for a century anywhere in this nation.

Never fear we have always found ways to getting the job done. We had no trains, we walked a lot. We just built what we needed. We still have rivers for transportation and we still have legs to walk. Some comm would survive such as the CB system and some people would have it up and working. Also Ham operators would be online.
