Catalonia has wanted to secede for a long time, as have the Basque. It's not as if they are imitating Scotland.

Secession now, secession tomorrow, secession forever.
Good luck to them, May self determination win out.

The right wing govt in Spain has a sense of entitlement. They believe they should rule, as Franco did. They will never allow a proper vote for independence, they couldn't afford to see Catalonia leave Spain, or the Basque Country, however Madrid has always controlled things and has always done so in a not so great way.

Modern Spain is a conglomerations of different regions and cultures. It only came into existence when Ferdinand and Isabella confirmed their kingdom. Almost all of Spain could be split - especially the Balearic Islands.

Well, Galicia, Basque Country, Catalonia, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Andalusia are the main places who want independence. Essentially "Spain" is Madrid with Castilla Leon, Castilla la Mancha and Extremadura being poor hanging on to Madrid.
