SpaceX launches the Falcon Heavy!

You know what really excites me? The fact that it launched with REUSEABLE boosters that launched and landed. On the news when they were covering the launch, they said that the cost of putting stuff in orbit just went from 10,000 dollars a pound to only 1,000. That is a serious savings.

I also think it's funny that Musk put his own personal Tesla into orbit around the sun. Kinda reminds me of the opening of the movie Heavy Metal.

You know.....................I think serious history was made today, and this could be the beginning of commercial space flight.

And, with the costs of launching stuff into orbit greatly being reduced, we should be able to build larger space stations up there.

I agree! This was an epic leap for mankind. The reusable boosters are game changers.

What I thought was funny was Musk's comment after watching this 23 story rocket launch. "Hmmm, looks small". He is already building a bigger one. Not only is this a huge step for space travel, it makes building in space feasible.

If we could start building in space, then interplanetary travel may very well be possible.

Interstellar is going to need science to make more leaps forward though.

Elon Musk is our wizard today. We had one in Edison. Now we have one in Musk. Reusable rockets, a rocket that will operate as cheaply as an airliner. Grid scale storage that makes wind and solar 24/7. Solar roofs and Powerwall's that make homes energy independent. Cars that you can supply your own fuel for, because they run on electricity. A mega-factory that not only supplies it's own power needs, but has power left over to put on the grid.

This is the kind of big dreams that took us to the moon, that built our interstates and big dams. That created the internet, this wonder that we communicate on over the whole world.

The strap-on boosters landed back at the Cape, but the core booster malfunctioned in its landing attempt on the drone barge and struck the water at high speed. Still, a magnificent day for SpaceX and private enterprise going into space.

You're right. Even though the main one malfunctioned, the two booster rockets that had already been used once made it through. Must have been a software malfunction.

Oh that's a new idea, like the space shuttle didn't have REUSABLE boosters..

And get your story right the 3rd REUSABLE booster was destroyed.

It ran out of fuel.

I like when Mankind, regardless of nationality, political system and religion, knows how to cook a good vesh.
The rocket is good - it's a fact ...

I never said that I do not like Americans ...
I said that I do not like American fools
Do you understand the difference?
-------------------------------------------------- ------------------------
The question is different ...
1. Only the Government can make fundamental discoveries in Science.
2. This missile is manufactured by the private owner
2. This rocket is just a commercial SHOW WITH CAR and not more ..
-------------------------------------------------- -----------------------
There is no Fundamental Science here.
Perhaps there is Applied Science ...

Selivan, normally a test rocket carries ballast, concrete blocks, as a test load. Musk not only launched a successful test rocket, he did some advertising for his auto company. With a puckish sense of humor.

Yes, applied science that can put very heavy loads up, loads that can be used to extend our knowledge. Without the technology of applied science, science would advance much more slowly.

That's absolutely right!
I can write a lot of cases when it's true that it was ...
But not now

You know, while I like the idea of David Bowie's "Starman" playing on a continuous loop, I'm wondering why he didn't include the title song from "Heavy Metal"? The opening credits of the movie showed a Corvette Sting Ray driving through space, with the pilot in a space suit. Kinda like what he did with his Tesla.

I support capitalism, I support socialism. Where each works best. I prefer to view them as tools, not ideologies. Without the efforts of governments to build the first rockets, Musk would not have had the knowledge to build his rockets. And that takes nothing at all away from Space X. As Musk said, this opens up space for corporate competition to access the resources of our solar system, and that is a good thing.

Fantastic work by private industry. The days of bloated, bureaucratic, government controlled space agencies are soon to be a thing of the past. I expect the price of space flight to drastically drop in the coming decades, Capitalism is fucking awesome.

Capitalism does not have its own missile to deliver astronauts to an international space station, but there is a rocket to throw the car into space and make a show :cryhug_1_::crying:

The US doesn't have a platform for getting its astronauts to the ISS either we have to rely on the Russians, and that's fucking pathetic. Time for the Fed to give a contract to a private company it will certainly be cheaper.
