The country does not free itself from these ties because legalized slavery was abolished, just like the Democrats are not free from their party's history because the GOP has taken over the Democratic party's racist, reactionary constituency in the South. Historical ties do not end, or go away, just because the country and party have changed. What could be more obvious?
