Theresa May to shut down the internet as we know it

Theresa May is planning to introduce huge regulations on the way the internet works, allowing the government to decide what is said online.

Ive just been reading this. I am sure that this started from good intentions, catch paedos and stop terrorists and crims, all the things we would support.

But the whole thing has grown into a monster that could affect free speech, how we make our living and live our lives, who we associate with and so on.

As a small example :

The manifesto even suggests that the government might stop search engines like Google from directing people to pornographic websites. "We will put a responsibility on industry not to direct users – even unintentionally – to hate speech, pornography, or other sources of harm," the Conservatives write.

A lot of people make their living from pornography and do so legally. My understanding is that it is not possible to access porno sites unless you are looking for them. Who made these people God so that they can decide what people wank off to. Child pornography excepted of course.

The other issue is hate speech. I am all for not giving nazis a platform but where are they going with this ?

I have been a leading member on this forum for over a year. However much of the content on here would be classified as hate speech in the UK. I read some of the vilest racist crap on here every day. Will Mrs May prevent me from accessing this board ?

I suspect that these old fools do not understand how the internet works and that their plan is unworkable. The UK govt has a history of disaster when it comes to IT and I have no doubt that they would screw this one up.

We already have laws to protect children,to protect our good name and to protect us from fraud and criminals. Why do we need more legislation ?

A Brit arguing for LESS government control?

I'm flabbergasted.

The Tories are just intent on making things so they do well and the poor, well, make money for the rich. They don't care about the poorer people at all.
