At what point of compensation, pay, benefits and incentives, does the volunteer soldier become a mercenary???

Simple answer: At no pay level. In the military sense a mercenary is a professional soldier hired for service in a foreign or private army.

Any more stupid questions?

Yes.

They cannot be mercenaries unless they are employed by a foreign government. Got that.

Now, at what point should they lose the title of "volunteer"?

As soon as we return to the draft. They "volunteer" to serve. The Government has no current ability to force anyone into military service.

No, they take the job. Does Johnny 'volunteer to serve' at the local hardware store?

Webster's Collegiate offers two definitions:

mercenary
adj.

1 Working or done for payment only; motivated by a desire for money or other gain; venal; greedy.

2 Designating a soldier serving for pay in a foreign army; hired.

n.

1 A professional soldier hired to serve in a foreign army.

2 Any person who will do anything for money; hireling.

Etymology
[L mercenarius < merces, pay, wages, akin to merx: see market]

Not true. If they work for money alone they are mercenaries, even if they are hired by their own government. Don't simplify the debate just because the other side is a complete idiot, it just makes you look stupid.

In which case everyone who works for financial gain is a mercenary. This thread is becoming more stupid than stupid!

If their sole purpose is financial gain, you are correct. The entire thread is stupid because the OP is stupid.

Copy that. Thanks a lot!

The point is if they were really volunteers there would be no money involved. In truth there are tens of thousands of dollars involved in a six year hitch.

Take away the "incentives" and see how many "volunteers" you get.

We have a terrible time viewing the soldier for what he is. Most are not fire breathing "patriots". They are just looking for a leg up. Nothing wrong with that but it does change the perspective.
