The worst school shooting in history at Va. Tech happened because the local police failed to do their duty. Unfortunately this is typical in areas dominated by big universities. Local police should have arrested the future shooter but they gave the monster a break time and time again even after complaints by females that they were being stalked. If the shooter had an arrest record he would not have been able to obtain a weapon "legally". Due to a glitch in the state law the shooter's court ordered psychiatric counseling records were sealed so that an instant name check required for gun purchases showed a clean record. Existing gun laws may have prevented the tragedy if they were enforced properly. In the Tucson shooting the local sheriff and media tried to blame Rush Limbaugh even though the shooter was well known as a nut case but politically connected well enough to avoid arrest. Mother Jones is a left wing rag and hardly an expert in the field of mass murder. Most of the cases of mass murder involved illegally obtained weapons or lax enforcement.

Less people own guns legally, however those that do own more now than they used to. I don't think that's exactly a good thing.

Don't read too much into that statistic.

That is more a function of being a richer society today than years gone by.

In the past, folks could afford maybe one hunting rifle and a shotgun.


My grandfather used his 32-20 caliber 1894 Winchester to hunt everything he hunted by rifle and the shotgun for small game and even slug hunting for deer, which was somewhat dangerous using his wire-twist (Damascus Steel) shotgun barrel. But those were the tools he could afford, so those are the tools he used.



Today an avid hunter may have many rifles that suit different situations...as his/her disposable income increased...he/she incorporates more specialized tools into the budget:



A short range and long range small game rifle.

A long range varmint gun.

A short range and long range medium game (deer) rifle.

A large game capable firearm.

A large gauge shotgun.

A mid gauge shotgun.

A pistol for defense.

A target pistol.

Etc. Etc. so on so on.

Plus, as he or she isn't in position where they a forced to sell or trade old guns to have the ability to afford new guns, some have a tendency to hang on to older guns out of nostalgia, or in case they are not satisfied with new calibers/manufacturers, or as a back up in the event one must be sent to the gunsmith.

The above opinion posted by a coward foreign national who doesn't even realize that the internet and the forum and perhaps his/her DNA exists today because of the sacrifice and generosity of the greatest nation ever to exist in the world.
