Comparing America today to America during WW2 is very misleading.
Americans were not phased by things happening in WW2 because be honest, Americans in that era didn't have nearly as much to lose. We had been in severe economic times for years. And even before the Great Depression vast portions of the country (like farmers) had been in a depression economically for an extra decade.
But today, despite the economic stresses, Americans have everything to lose
