Separation of church and state makes him want to throw up

Santorum: Separation Of Church And State 'Makes Me Want To Throw Up'

Damn that pesky little First Amendment. Its just SO inconvenient to Santorum.

Sadly, there are many rw's who are so dumb, they actually don't realize what this creep is saying.

First Amendment fail

It doesn't call for separation of Church and State. Merely calls for no official religion.
Broader than no state religion:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

You might want to look up what a common law system is since that is what this country is. Case law interpreting the words of the constitution has equal weight with the document itself, since we aren't a code state like France.

You would do well to actually learn something about constitutional construction.
And you might want to look up "admiralty maritime law"...You'll find it in Black's....Then you might learn something about the real jurisdiction we're subjugated under.

wut???

As the name implies, admiralty maritime law concerns the sea, not a national legal system. :cuckoo:
Look it up, numbnutz.

All you rw's - is THAT really what you want?Do you really want some evangelical fruitcake telling you what's allowed in your bedroom?

Well, to be fair, I think the answer is yes. Evidently a pretty healthy percentage of them want to be led by a person who puts his/her religion above all else. I suppose they think that those of us who aren't so thrilled about that are the great unwashed masses, and that such rule will show us the error of our ways. There are other countries whose leaders do that, too, but I don't think I'll mention them right now.

.

BTW folks, in case you forgot, it was RICK SANTORUM who said that the 'separation of church' and state, the bedrock of our country, 'makes him sick'.

Why are we fighting each other when THAT is, or should be, the enemy of every true American?

Rick Santorum has a law degree, and he certainly knows the following:

1. We have a Godless Constitution.

2. We have the First Amendment to that Constitution.

3. Under President George Washington, the Treaty of Tripoli (Article 11) clearly states that the U.S. was not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.

Piss on that treaty.

That is ONE example you have of our government denying our Christian heritage. Compared to literally thousands of examples of us expressing our Christian founding.

Oh and being founded on Christian principles is NOT the same thing as being a Christian theocracy, so don't bother.

Nice of you to completely mischaracterize the quote. From your link
I don't believe in an America where the separation of church and state are absolute," he told 'This Week' host George Stephanopoulos. "The idea that the church can have no influence or no involvement in the operation of the state is absolutely antithetical to the objectives and vision of our country...to say that people of faith have no role in the public square? You bet that makes me want to throw up."
The role that the church and people of faith have within the government has nothing to do with the first amendment. The role of government in your religion does. There is a stark difference.

What kind of country do you think we would have if the government was unable to prevent or strike down any law or policy the Baptist Church wrote in Sunday school? Be pretty crappy wouldn't it? By now they would be executing people for possession of alcohol or porn or being gay.

Benjamin Franklin, cited by one poster here, was anti religion, though not an atheist.

"The Infinite Father expects or requires no worship or praise from us."

"I conceive, then, that the Infinite has created many beings or gods vastly superior to man."

"It may be these created gods are immortals; or it may be that after many ages, they are changed, and others supply their places.

"Howbeit, I conceive that each of these is exceeding good and very powerful; and that each has made for himself one glorious sun, attended with a beautiful and admirable system of planets.

"It is that particular wise and good God, who is the author and owner of our system, that I propose for the object of my praise and adoration" (Franklin's Works, Vol. ii., p. 2).

Yes, free to worship as one chooses, OR chooses not.

Way to fail AGAIN on the first amendment and sidestepping the points that were brought up. Continue to be the partisan hack that you always are....

Funny that some seem to believe the First means they have a right to never hear about religion, or that religious people have no right to want their moral values respected by the government.

But my favorite are those who think the First means NO ONE can violate their religious rights. Sorry Charlie, it only appllies to the government.

Bed rock of our society my ass. The bedrock of our society is LIBERTY. Period, end of story.

Which extends no extra right whatsoever to the not side, so progressive socialists can treat religious people worse than they do smokers.

IF Santorum doesn't wish to recognize the separation of church and state, then the First Amendment would also allow Islam, Scientology, and any other religion just as much power as Christianity in the U.S. legal system. He can't have it both ways to promote his theocracy agenda.

That's the part they don't like. The oft mistake the word OF to mean FROM.

I blame it on illiteracy.
No, it's willful debauchery of the English language...Both Orwell and Rand talked at length about it, as a necessary tool of collectivist tyrants of all stripes.

There is no separation of church and state mentioned in the first amendment

If you don't understand that to have freedom of religion, then you need freedom FROM religion, youre sorely misguided.

I think Rick santorum would probably be more comfortable living in the vatican. It's beautiful. Lots of great art and no one will offend his sensibilities with little inconveniences like him not being ble to force me to live by his religious tenets.
Atheism is a religion and should be separate from government. I am offended by atheism and do not think it should be allowed to be practiced in public.

Please explain to me how this can be achieved legally.

Hey stupid, they DO have as much power. Muslims are more than welcome to try to influence our laws , as long as what they want doesn't violate provisions of the COTUS.

IOW NO religion could for instance petition for the law to read that thieves have their hands chopped off, because that violates the prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment. Same with Christians couldn't vote to stone an adulteress to death, that's cruel and unusual punishment.

Likewise Congress opens every session with a prayer. Religious leaders from EVERY major religeon have led those prayers over the years.

See how that works dummy?

Ah, you give people credit for being smarter than I think they are.
