Score One For The Good Guys: Court Rules Against Traffic Cameras...

That's pretty stupid.

Already cameras are having a positive effect in terms of bringing down people who disobey traffic laws and crime in general.

Knowing that your actions are subject to audit, makes you less likely to break the law.

That may or not be the case with some cameras, but not the 'red light' cameras:

Study finds red light cameras cause accidents - WatchdogWire - Florida

Barbara Langland-Orban, PhD, John T. Large, PhD, Etienne E. Pracht, PhD from the University of South Florida (USF) conducted a study on red light cameras in 2008. They updated their study in 2011. Langland-Orban, et. al. found that red light cameras (RLC) increase the number of accidents at intersections by 28%.

The 2008 study found:

“Rather than improving motorist safety, red-light cameras significantly increase crashes and are a ticket to higher auto insurance premiums, researchers at the University of South Florida College of Public Health conclude. The effective remedy to red-light running uses engineering solutions to improve intersection safety, which is particularly important to Florida’s elderly drivers, the researchers recommend.

Instead, they increase crashes and injuries as drivers attempt to abruptly stop at camera intersections. If used in Florida, cameras could potentially create even worse outcomes due to the state’s high percent of elderly who are more likely to be injured or killed when a crash occurs.”

“The rigorous studies clearly show red-light cameras don’t work,” said lead author Barbara Langland-Orban, professor and chair of health policy and management at the USF College of Public Health.

The 2011 study update states:

“It is important for the public at large and federal, state, and local officials to understand that motor vehicle safety is advanced through evidence-based methods. Attempts to generate revenue through traffic citations are directly contrary to public safety since infractions are increased by improper roadway engineering, creating hazards and expense for the public.”

The 2011 study update indicates that the media is complicit in promoting the positives of red light cameras and ignoring negatives. The 2011 study update noted:

It looks like some municipalities provide anecdotal evidence of the above:

New Jersey's much-criticized red-light camera program has taken several hits lately, including new data showing that rear-end collisions have increased at the intersection of Route 1 and Bakers Basin Road since cameras were put in place.

Lawrence town officials are now trying to decide whether to drop out of the program intended to reduce car accidents and traffic violations at intersections.

Lawrence's town manager said the decision to remain in the red-light program is a simple one: "If it's not safer, we shouldn't do it."

In the year since the lights were installed in November 2011 at the busy intersection, there were 39 read-end collisions, up from 30 in the year before. That's an increase of more than 25 percent in just 12 months.

The total number of accidents, including collisions other than rear-end crashes, also went up, rising from 38 to 50, the town's police department said.

The town manager said the reason for being part of the program was to make the intersection safer; a goal clearly not achieved.

That's BS. What happens is some reckless psycho decides to run the red but the guy in front chooses to obey the law and stop and so we have a rear-end collision. Don't blame the camera for that.

One day, most Americans will come to the conclusion that true Freedom & Liberty is imperfect and messy, but absolutely worth preserving. Bad things will happen. But that's just the way it has to be in a truly free, but imperfect Society.
