Nationally, we spend about $12,000 per student per year on public school k-12 education. What if half that amount ($6,000) was made available to parents who wanted their children to attend non-public schools? Wouldn't this benefit both parents and public schools who would end up with more money per student?

Sure, let's turn education over to concentrated corporate wealth and power too, might as well, we've handed everything else over to them including the political system and the media.

Schools get 100% now, what is their motivation?

Oh I know, they really want kids to get the best education possible for each student.

How about every child gets the full 12,000 dolllars...why should they only get 6,000 dollars to go to school when the kids trapped in nightmare schools get the full 12?

Our college system is built on freedom of attendence...and it is the best in the world...but the left needs the first 12 years to create good left wingers......that is why they fight vouchers...

And the parents will have the power.....which terrifies the teachers unions and the democrats.......

The education system is a ~$3T pile of public funding private corporations want to take over; it's that simple. That's what "privatization" is.

Corporate power is never in the hands of the people.

Nope....it is giving the parents the power of choice...if a school isn't educating their children..they can leave..and find a better school, because they will have the money to do it. Right now, if a school is bad, they have to move their family across an arbitrary border to simply send their kids to a new school...that is insane. Vouchers change that...they can send their kids to wherever they want...without the teachers unions stopping them.

Oh I'm well aware of that the pitch is. But it's bullshit.

It's the best in the world because it is built on competition.

The other half of the parents are subsidizing the private sector. Bad idea.

Many (most?) teachers do want to provide a good education, a bit tough when the cost of books & class size has risen, and the Republicans want to privatize education. What better way to reach that goal than to starve the beast?

It's the best in the world because it is built on competition.

And, it is a place of learning, not indoctrination as so many seem to think.

Really? Try applying your signature to the public school systems' near monopoly on k-12 education.
