San Francisco politicians love to opine on major national and international issues - even if their stance will have no bearing on anything other than bolstering their own egos. Impeach George W. Bush! End the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan!

But this time, City Hall officials have seized on a significant issue - the swell of undocumented children from Central America crossing the U.S. border - that they just might be able to influence in a real way. The Board of Supervisors has voted unanimously to fund relief efforts for children arriving in the city, according to immigration advocates, at a pace of 200 to 250 every month.

The specifics won't be ironed out for several weeks, but supervisors say they want to fund mental health services, housing and legal representation, including sending city lawyers to the border to represent newly arrived youth.

Mayor Ed Lee rebuffed the federal Health and Human Services Department's idea of placing a large shelter in San Francisco for immigrant youth, saying there isn't enough space. But he said he wants to fund a humanitarian relief effort and is trying to figure out how to offer services not only in Spanish, but in Mayan and other Central American languages as well.

In many cities, this would be viewed as crazy - especially at a time when many U.S. citizens in San Francisco struggle to pay for housing and medical care. But so far, there hasn't been a peep of resistance. After all, San Francisco is the most liberal of liberal cities and is celebrating its 25th year as a sanctuary city, protecting undocumented immigrants as long as they don't break any other laws.
