Bill Clinton came in THIRD place in 1992 in NH, and still went on to get the nomination and presidency. George W. Stupid lost New Hampshire by a huge margin and STILL went on to win the nomination and steal the presidency.
Heres the thing. The Democrats have a major safety valve against what you are talking about. It's called "Superdelegates". Hilary doesn't have to Crush Sanders... All she has to do is keep up with him and the Superdelegates will do the rest.
