iCue > George H.W. Bush on Exxon Valdez and ANWR

Three senior administration officials are in Valdez this morning to decide whether the federal government should take over the cleanup effort. Exxon, whose tanker spilled 11 million gallons of oil into the sound, has been in charge of the cleanup up to now, but environmentalists say the effort has been inadequate, and Exxon now admits it cannot keep up with the spreading oil slick.

President George H. W. Bush declared the bay off-limits to drilling after the Exxon Valdez disaster — a move reversed by his son George W. Bush in 2007.

Washington—The Supreme Court on Wednesday slashed the $2.5 billion punitive damages award in the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster to $500 million.

The court ruled that victims of the worst oil spill in U.S. history may collect punitive damages from Exxon Mobil Corp., but not as much as a federal appeals court determined.

Justice David Souter wrote for the court that punitive damages may not exceed what the company already paid to compensate victims for economic losses, about $500 million compensation.

Perhaps, rather than trying to call all Republicans hypocrites based on an event that happened 20 years ago, we should examine why the media (not individuals here) seemed to give the Bush Administration a pass on the Exxon Valdez disaster...and today we and the media seem to hold our presidents personally accountable for everything that goes wrong in our nation.

To make this a partisan question is absolutely ludicrous, considering that the very same accusations of hypocrisy could be made against Democrats - who gave George H.W. Bush "a pass" on Exxon Valdez, mercilessly crucified George W. Bush for Katrina, and now seem to be on the fence about Obama and the Deepwater Horizon...although many seem just tickled that he "made" BP give $20 Billion dollars that the company had obviously already intended to give.

So...lets look at this objectively....

Are there truly differences between the Exxon Valdez disaster and Katrina and Deepwater Horizon that make the scrutiny and blame W. Bush and Obama justified when compared to the relative "pass" H.W. Bush received? Or have we simply become a nation that holds its President accountable to a much higher (some might say impossibly high) standard?

Could location, population, photo-op opportunities, level of potential disaster, etc. be factors?

Exxon's official position is that punitive damages greater than $25 million are not justified because the spill resulted from an accident, and because Exxon spent an estimated $2 billion cleaning up the spill and a further $1 billion to settle related civil and criminal charges.
