"The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration." -- 16th Amendment, ratified on February 3, 1913.
The one Progressive action which caused the greatest change in our Republic was the passage of the above Amendment. Prior to the passage of the 16th Amendment, the States themselves funded the Government.
U.S. Const., art. I, § 8, cl. 1 "The Congress shall have power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises . . . but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States"
The 16th Amendment did two things: it neutered the States as powerful, sovereign entities with a meaningful say in the scope and direction of the government and left the individual citizen unprotected from the actions of the federal government.
As we see in most of modern class warfare, the government has taken it upon itself to be an arbiter of what is "Fair". They have this power from this Godawful Amendment.
Repeal it! 100 years is enough, let's go back the state funding the government and keep the federal government our of our pockets and lives
