As previously pointed out, Europe buys 50% of the mediocre Russian exports, the US 5%. Putin was raised in the Soviet system, may look "strong" due to his Soviet style repression, but knows little of free market trade. Any significant down slide in exports, the Russian economy takes a huge hit.
