Exactly. There's a big difference between "family oral history" and publicly claiming something. My family history says we're descended from Jefferson Davis, but you don't see me trying to join Daughters of the Confederacy based on just that story.

FYI, Warren didn't claim "Native American heritage" as a student; she claimed it as a professor. I'm pretty sure the colleges she worked for would have wanted to hire her, anyway, so I don't think she got hired JUST because she was masquerading as an Indian. However, knowing how concerned about "diversity" colleges are and knowing that they DID subsequently tout her as such, I have to wonder if there wasn't at least a little of "Thank God we can hire her, instead of having to go find a real minority" in their thinking.

She could have told colleagues of her Native American heritage and then the school listed her as one to promote diversity. That doesn’t mean she used that to get the job nor does it mean that was known to Harvard before she got the job.
