Plea Deal For Former Congressional IT Staffer Debunks Right-Wing Conspiracy Theories
A former IT specialist for congressional Democrats who has figured prominently in right-wing conspiracy theories pleaded guilty Tuesday to making false statements on a loan application. Nevertheless, federal prosecutors said they found no evidence that he stole government secrets, as many conservatives, including President Trump, have suggested.

Imran Awan — who worked for former chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and other Democratic lawmakers — was arrested a year ago at Dulles International Airport outside Washington, D.C., and charged with bank fraud.

Since then, right-wing websites such as The Daily Caller and commentators on Fox News have pushed a narrative that Awan, a Pakistani immigrant, used his job as a cover for stealing government secrets. In tweets, Trump referred to him as "the Pakistani mystery man" and vaguely suggested that he was tied to the hacking of the DNC's email servers.

However, Awan's guilty plea on Tuesday was unrelated to his work as an IT consultant.

Awan's attorney, Christopher Gowen, said his client acknowledged that in December 2016, he had submitted an online loan application listing a property in his wife's name as her primary residence. It was instead a rental property.

Gowan said Awan's misrepresentation was "wrong" and aimed at speeding the loan approval so that he could send money to his ailing father in Pakistan.

As The Washington Post notes, "the agreement included an unusual passage that described the scope of the investigation and cleared Awan of a litany of conspiracy theories promulgated on Internet blogs, picked up by right-leaning news sites and fanned by Trump on Twitter."

What I find interesting is that he was arrested in the process of boarding an overseas flight. He had been forced to wear an ankle monitor leading up to the plea deal. Now while awaiting sentencing, he isn't wearing one. How did they determine he's no longer a flight risk.

They probably just had him surrender his passport. He isn't going anywhere without that.

That's weird. He had a server, well bits of it anyway, in his garage when he was arrested and we know for sure that he had government stuff on it. Wasserman Schultz as much as declared it by her illegal behavior with the DC police.
He pleaded guilty to a NON related charge. The article SAYS nothing about ANY guilt in any other charge. Nothing in it states he is NOT guilty OR still open to charges. It's quite common to put someone in jail pending other charges.

Apparently not....or nothing criminal.
Dew ewe still trust Wasserman?

On what? I never had strong feelings one way or the other. Point is - this was yet another conspiracy theory that ended up being baseless. Won't stop those who believe in it, but that is the nature of conspiracy theories.
She rigged the DNC against Bernie.

Wassermans brother, an assistant D.C D.A attorney brokered the deal....no conflict of interest there, eh?

Does not alter the results of the investigation though.

It could have. That's why in a normal Court there can't even be the APPEARANCE of impropriety. But, like I said, these people are above the law. At least they think they are.

I don't think so. They are cleared in the court of law. That is the purpose of an investigation. What's the point if we are going to cling to our belief's regardless of what investigation reveals? We can't accept it?

Who is cleared? Like I said Coyote, I actually AM an officer of the Court. There is no way in hell that something like this would be allowed to occur in the Courts here in Nevada. It simply would not happen.

The right will say that until Nevada courts make a ruling you don't like, and then those courts will join the ranks of the "DEEP STATE" Your trusted world is getting smaller by the day, and soon, you won't even trust each other. It's sad when so many once reasonable people intentionally throw away logic in favor of ideology, as the right has.

I guess you missed the part where even the APPEARANCE of unethical behavior is to avoided at all costs. It's not about ideology you twit, it's about the Rule of Law, which you clearly wipe your ass with every single day.

He's an IT guy...

So one of your conspiracy theories gets debunked so now you start another one.

Good luck with that, while at the same time you call the Russia investigation a hoax. How ironic.

‘As The Washington Post notes, "the agreement included an unusual passage that described the scope of the investigation and cleared Awan of a litany of conspiracy theories promulgated on Internet blogs, picked up by right-leaning news sites and fanned by Trump on Twitter."’ ibid

Needless to say, rightwing ‘news’ sites, Trump, and conservatives in general will continue to attempt to propagate such conspiracy theories and lies.

Residents from states like Kentucky can't even fly from Kentucky to another state using their driver's license anymore... they HAVE to get a passport. Yet this IT guy is going to somehow fly out of the U.S. without one. :abgg2q.jpg:

It's still a new law... they say the IDs aren't good enough. If a U.S. citizen can't fly from state to state without a passport, then it sure as hell isn't going to be "easy" for someone to fly out of the country without a passport.

Appearance of unethical behavior? You mean like Trump resorts charging US so much money every time he visits his own property to play golf? You mean unethical behavior like that?

The evidence was / is overwhelming, just like in all the Liberal scandals that went went on during that time, some still going on. The Judge completely ignored th US IG's report that poi nted out 44 Democrats violated rules / regs by not doing a background check which I have alerted them to the fact that the a ones were connected to terrorists. The IG report pointed out that the Democratic National Committee chairwoman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, gave these terrorists connected spies illegal access to Classified house servers and computers and information. The judge said there was no evidence that the a one's stole government computers or servers, even though the investigation showed that the current server is not the original server but is one the original server was replaced with. The original classified server is gone, stolen.

Once again we see and are forced to endure another Democrat cover up of obvious crimes, and even the cover-up itself is ridiculous, yet they are depending on this stupidity of others to buy there fake news crap.
