Dog are much more resilient than humans. Many former fighting dogs and bait dogs have been successfully rehabilitated and placed in homes.

No dog, abused or not, is entirely to be trusted around young kids. Young kids do not know how to behave around them. Dogs and young kids/babies should not be left alone together.

Gotta agree. Pits do get a bad rap simply because of the dog fighting. I have many friends who own pits and wouldn't own any other breed.

Look at Michael Vicks pits. Of all the dogs they confiscated only two had to be PTS. One was seriously ill and one was so vicious they could do nothing with him. All the others were taken by rescue groups.

The mere fact that some pits grow old and die without ever being set off is in no way proof of the contrary.

Beagles can't control their noses... because of their breeding.

Retreivers naturally love to fetch and swim... because of their breeding.

Pit Pulls are naturally aggressive... because of their breeding.

The only reason to own one is if you're into dog fighting or you're a drug dealer who needs to protect your merchandise.

Most dogs are unsafe in certain situations. It is incumbent on owners to learn about their breed and dogs in general, and to pay attention to the animal to prevent such problems.

Because they hope that it will prove unnecessary, that the quarantine will find she is free of problems, and that some caring soul from the area will adopt her.

I had a roommate once who adopted a female pit bull puppy, named "Bernice." She was the cutest, sweetest little thing, just like all puppies are. BUT, even before she could waddle without falling down, she had jaws of steel and could leap across the couch and clamp onto a piece of pizza before you knew what was coming. I guess when they grow up, that's what makes them valuable as fighters because they sure aren't mean dogs until they're programmed to be.

I think ALL animals still have primal genes that will cause them to react aggressively under the right (wrong?) circumstances, even humans. Most dogs and cats don't like to be startled, even by their owners. I once had a cat (no, not my little black guy) that bit my hand so bad that I had to have stitches, all because he was lying on his back sound asleep in a chair, and I reached over and scratched his belly. Don't know what he might have been dreaming, but he let out a snarl and sunk his teeth into my hand. Thereafter, being a cat of course, he just jumped down, stretched and sauntered away. Ho hum. While I had to make a trip to the emergency room.
