as is known, any brick or metal furnace should have a pipe to "provide a hood" ... The longer and higher the tube, the better ...

A 4 sided channel is all you need to VENT a flame from a furnace.

I'm old..............wasn't prohibited here and it worked very well.
 
In the USA a furnace has a pipe for exhaust but these are gas or electric furnaces..A fireplace is not the same as a furnace...
