Photo shows Marines posing with Nazi-like symbol in Afghanistan – CNN Security Clearance - CNN.com Blogs

Update: The Pentagon just put out this statement: "Racist and anti-Semitic symbols have absolutely no place alongside the men and women of America's armed forces. Secretary Panetta has asked the Marine Corps to look into this matter and to take appropriate action."

A picture of an elite Marine unit posing with a flag symbol that is similar to a Nazi "SS" logo has surfaced on the Internet.

Marine Corps Scout Snipers from the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion are seen standing and kneeling with their sniper rifles in front of a blue flag with white Nazi "SS" runes. The picture was taken in 2010 in Afghanistan and the photo's description says the "SS" flag had been "adopted and used by the Marines in reference to Scout Sniper."

The most successful snipers in general were the soviet women. I don't know what they used for a symbol. Sickle and tampon?

The all time best was a Finn.

Soviet and Finnish symbols would be a little bit better

Looks more like a couple of lightning bolts portrayed through the use of graphic drawing to me.

All PC BS aside - this SS symbol has got to be intimidating as hell to the enemy
Personally I would have went with your basic skull and crossbones on a nice background of USMC red

Ok, so the Waffen-SS used Runic script; they also used the skull and crossbones (Totenkopf). The SS also died in 1945-to young people today, that's ancient history, so how come an organization defunct for over 65 years gets an all time exclusive on the use of a script and a symbol that have both seen considerable use before and since? Much ado about nothing.

Obviously looking at the rifles in the photo - the "SS" references their group name Scout Snipers.
I am soooo glad that CNN found this to be so interesting that they just haaaad to bring this to everyone's attention.
Afghanistan will be overrun by the Taliban soon...but by all means - let's talk about a homemade unit flag that resembles an old Nazi insignia...waaay more important.
