David Byrne, Roger Waters, John Lennon, David Crosby, Diana Ross, John Fogerty...etc.
It's only a partial list. When egos collide bands dissolve like ice chips in a camp fire.

When the stakes are high egos take over.

in fogerty's case he was the whole band.....the other guys were riding his coattails.....

It is a difficult task to maintain any organization of people, and pop music bands are extremely vulnerable to the changes in the members' individual expectations of the direction of the band's presentation.

Bands tend to have a shelf-life. It may not all be "ego". Some of it is that the labels have committees that so pigeonhole groups and their records that it is natural for some people to bolt.

In almost every case you could make that claim. David Byrne for instance, could have.
He wrote all the songs, did all the singing, was the front man, all the "bits" the Talking Heads did
onstage where all constructed around him.
But eventually his ego couldn't be contained by the popular band because it meant giving up a
small bit of the spotlight.
