It's also about dissuading countries from using oil as a political weapon. Or it was until Trump. Although we did assemble coalitions to boycott buying oil from nations that threated other nations militarily.

W spectacularly caused 4K dead and 31K wounded and the loss of trillions. But while the neocons envisioned oil fields with huge "property of the US" signs on them, W really only signed onto nation building in Iraq. And that was really about 9-11.

Nevertheless, the human and financial cost of coalitions and ME involvement pale in comparison to Europe or Asia. And except for the mid-70s, we pretty much accessed the oil in a free market.

Anyway, Trump is apparently offering some new doctrine to the use of US force. ISIS and the access to a free market for oil are existential to the US. Or they were until 2016. I suppose we don't need the oil, or we don't need it right now. I think we had the technology even in 1978 to pretty much use a fraction of what we do. Osama was motivated largely by our military in Saudi Arabia (which Trump is increasing!). I don't see any political solution to ISIS. It has to be leave us the fuck alone, and we'll leave you alone - even if you choose not to sell any oil to anybody - but make a move to harm us, and we'll kill you.

Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Thursday that they have reached a cease-fire agreement between Turkey and Kurds, following a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara.

The deal is for a 120-hour cease-fire, during which time the Kurdish-led forces could pull back. All Turkish military operations under the recent offensive known as Operation Peace Spring will pause during that time, and the operation itself will come to an end upon the completion of the Kurdish withdrawal, under the terms of the deal. Pence said a safe zone between the two sides will be established.

“Turkey and the United States agree on the priority of respecting vulnerable human life, human rights, and particularly the protection of religious and ethnic communities in the region,” Pence said during a press conference while in Turkey.

yeah. Israel was the reason we lost a free market in the mid-70s. I honestly don't know whether the existence of Israel should have been an existential interest of the US, or one we had no choice but to fight to the death over. I am sure that in 1946 and today we have an existential interest in making sure some country doesn't choose to kill off every religious or racial group, and even prevent them from fleeing. I'm just not sure that Truman had to recognize Israel as a country to do that. It made a great book and movie. Paul Newman looked fantastic as a Jew. (JOKE)
